  • Wow they still try to rent those shiny spinning disks?
    How quaint

Just kidding. I wonder how much longer the traditional Video shop can limp along for. I suppose a lot of people are just worn into the habit since the 80s.

    • +2

It so happens that some of us, both techno-philes and -phobes alike, be we 'across' our devices of convenience or baffled luddite, still enjoy the simple pleasure of visiting the video store, supporting local business and being passed a disc by a pretty girl across a counter, as opposed to acquiring the normally inferior-quality digital equivalent.

A patchy matroska file that some smartass teenager ripped in his parents' basement eating up my bandwidth? Gimme one of those shiny spinning discs any day.

      • I was more commenting on the viability of bricks and mortar video shops, and how much longer they will go on.
As we move more and more into digital life, data will be directly downloaded: legal movies (Big pond), ABC iView CNN and all the others the point being the days of the DVD as a container for data or dwindling.
I have also watched plenty of downloaded "ripped" movies too and I think you are unfairly describing them…."smartass teenager","parents' basement" etc.
If you know what you are doing, quality is usually excellent and right or wrong, the majority of average Aussies watch them now.
Mums, dads, kids and smartass teenagers. Everyone!
Not saying I think its right, its just where its obviously heading.

  • Agree! - the death knell has well and truly sounded for the video shop - they'll soon go the way of the photo processing lab and the dodo….

  • Blu-ray rental? My local video shop used to offer $1 movie rentals on Tuesdays and Thursdays (including Blu-ray). It closed down. :-(

Renting a Blu-ray for $1-$2 is a great deal for me - since I usually only watch a movie once (and you cannot possibly buy a legit blu-ray for $1-$2).

    • It closed down

      North Balwyn ???

  • It says Only at Participating Stores

    which stores are participating ?

  • I have three within 2 minutes of each other. Blockbuster which has $2 hire on tuesdays. Civic which has $1.50 weeklys on tuesday and $2 new release wednesday and a Network which has a small range of Blu ray so I dont bother.
I think the Brick and motar stores will always have potential if managed well.
I rent Blu ray as I cant download them and If I could it would cost me more than $2

    • Well we are in a transition state right now and it sounds like for you, the value is still with actually renting the physical disks and I am right with you on actual human interaction I.E. talking to a fellow human and making a purchase.
Never-the-less, data allowances will keep exponentially increasing, as will rents.
      Writing is on the wall.
Have you seen those Oovie machines? They are an interesting middle ground (for a while)
