Porting number to a different name (person)

So I ported my number from Optus to Boost fine (took about 15 minutes total), then tried to do the same for my wife. I forgot that she was on my Optus account, which is in my name.

I put the port request in on Friday, and she's still with Optus as at midday Monday. She just got a call from Telstra saying that there's an issue, and when she explained that it may be because it was in my name, they asked me to call them.

The number they gave me was Telstra. When I called, I eventually got some guy in their technical team who said "yeah, we're having issues with Optus and Vodafone. Just try again tomorrow."

He seemed to just brush me off, and I'm no more sure that the issue is going to be resolved tomorrow.

Has anyone else had issues porting to a different name? I can see how it would be problematic (my bad), but they haven't been very clear about whether that's even the cause of the delay.

Edit: solved.
I had to call them again and ask them to process the port in my name. They were much more helpful the second time around. All sorted now. Thanks to those who helped.

Porting from Postpaid to a different name will work as the Account number is what is used for the port.

Porting from prepaid can be problematic, you need to ensure the Date of Birth on the loosing carrier (in your case Optus) matches the gaining carrier (your case Boost)
If this does not match then it will repeatedly fail, so if you are porting from a prepaid then you would need to do a transfer of title before attempting the port.

Saying that, there has been and is still massive changes around porting happening of late due to fraud prevention etc
Sms to phones you have to reply too etc
and soon the systems will check name and account number when porting from a postpaid (this is not the case yet, just sharing for anyone who reads this comment)

you need to ensure the Date of Birth

Yep. This will be the issue.

OP, probably the fastest way is to call Boost/Telstra and cancel the transfer. Then apply to port again using your details. It could take forever otherwise.

Thanks both. My wife said (after I posted this) that they complained that the name and date of birth didn't match, so you're spot on.

I'm concerned that if I cancel the transfer, I'll lose the $150 value on the sim that has already been activated. I haven't spoken with anyone on the phone yet who seems confident enough in what they're telling me that I'd trust them to cancel this.

What I would suggest is this
          1) let the boost port fail (which it has it seems)
          2) Call Optus with your wife with you and do a transfer of title (change of ownership)
          3) Contact Boost and ask them to resubmit the port (it will work now as you have updated info with Optus and the port wont fail)

          • @jimbobaus: Or just tell boost to port it to your name and then in 6 months time (if still with boost) do a change of ownership (apparently you have to wait 6 months)

I had the same issue. Called them, gave them my details and I ported within a couple of hours.

            • @stratbargain: Thanks. That's what I was expecting to do (and what I think they asked me to do), but it sounds like I got lazy Larry on my first attempt.

        • Don't cancel. Just ring them and tell them to transfer it to you instead of your wife.
