What's This Feature Called? (Press a Button and The Boot Will Automatically Close)

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure the correct term that describes the feature on a car where you can press a button and the boot will automatically close.

With the arrival of our first newborn recently, I'm trying to look for a car that has this feature because the boot on the current CX5 is way too heavy for her to pull down with one hand, let alone having a screaming child.

If you need examples, this button is on my sister's 2009 Lexus RX350, and I've seen it on some European cars as well but I'm having trouble finding a list of cars that have this feature.

I've tried automatic boot, electronic trunk, powered tailgate + any combination of those words but I'm still having a hard time find a list.

I hope you guys can help. Thanks in advance!

  • Mr Google says, Tailgate Lift / Assist

  • Place the child in the car or pram first, then two hands are available for the tailgate?

My guess is power or powered tailgate. Probably not very common yet except in premium models.

Actually you’ll probably find that all the different brands call it some thing different while it is still not common.

      • Yea while I appreciate that different brands name it something different, I was hoping for the generic term used so I could use a keyword search in Carsales. Similar to how Nissan calls their stuff intelli assist or whatever, but the generic term would be like a 360 degree camera, or parking assist etc

Unfortunately the use of different names is going to make it hard to use keyword searches.

    Electric Tailgate?

  • Powered Tailgate. Have it in my CR-V.

Seems like no one's published a list, so you'll have to just look one by one…Eg the current CX-5 GT has it.

The better one is the foot wavey one! They have it on CR-Vs, but not in Australia :(

    • Thank you kind sir

    The feature is called Graham.

hands free tailgate (for the version where you swing your leg under the rear)
smart power tailgate (wave hand across sensor)
… both need proximity key close by.

Each manufacturer seems to dream up their own name.

Power back door sounds…..wrong. Or that could just be my dirty mind.

      • Just back her up and engage the power back door.

    • Thanks, all very large cars which I don’t think she is too confident driving. Rag 4 would be the closest bet

Holden has this on their remaining stock of vehicles.

    It's called, "Open and Shut"

    (too soon?)

    • They also have a feature where instead of a button you can wave your foot under the rear bumper to open/close the boot/tailgate. Not sure if other companies have that feature..

  • Powered tailgate.

Even pressing a button will be far too tricky for a newborn. Why don't you get the mother to do it? :p

  • Kia call it a “power tailgate.”
On my Sorento you can select how it works - via button in the remote, or you can set it to work on a proximity (stand with the remote within 1m of the tailgate for 3 seconds and it will open. Then use the remote or the button on the bottom of the tailgate to close).

  • Subaru forester had it
friend had that car and we drove it

    • Thanks for the recommendation. Was it new quite old?

My Subaru Outback has it. Great family car.

    • What year should I look for?

    Laziness

    • pretty much, these days prams are more heavy lifting than closing a boot lol

  • Expensive. But that's after it breaks.

Thanks to those with helpful comments. I’m fine with managing the baby. It’s more for my wife who is quite tiny and frail.

The reason I ask is because I’ve seen her struggle with the boot when I asked her to show me how she’d manage when I’m at work. Just trying to be a considerate husband here, and want to look for something that I thought would make her life a tad easier.

Opening the boot isn’t the problem, it’s when she tries to close the heavy SUV boot with her 44kg of skin and bones, she’s essentially doing a pull up rather than closing the boot. Cheers

  • I think I might go with this one, as it looks easy enough to install myself.

Seems a bit cheaper than buying a new car!

  • Skoda range have it too, we purchased it as an option on ours. Was about $600 as I recall. Think it was called automatic tailgate.

  • I once had a holden where you’d hold the boot open with a stick. Pull out stick and voila, automatically closing boot. Ahhh, Holden, I’ll miss you…
