Prices More Expensive via ShopBack - Booking.com Example

Just a warning if you use Shopback to check prices directly with the retailer as well as via Shopback, as I've found the original price to be different in the case of Booking.com.

Specifically, I went to make a booking through Booking.com and the accommodation was 14% more expensive through the Shopback link than directly through Booking.com. So even with the Shopback discount I would have been worse off booking through Shopback. Exactly the same dates and room.

I complained to Shopback and they agreed this was the case. This was their response:

'After checking, I can see that indeed it appears to be a difference in the price.

I understand that this is not an ideal situation and you should know that ShopBack is not involved and has no control on the pricing customers see on the brands page.

This being the case, it is not something we can look into further. Prices shown on a brands site are dictated by the brand.

We would advise you to review prices accordingly and decide which options would be best for you taking into account the cashback that would be earned from ShopBack as well'

Hope that helps others to make sure they are truly getting a discount. I certainly think it's disappointing and misleading Shopback users.

Claim the Shopback then claim the Price Match if you can be bothered:

    They have an exception:

If your booking or the offer you're comparing with is from Booking.basic or a partner provider on Booking.com

But you could argue that Booking.com itself is not "a partner provider on Booking.com" (though I'm not entirely sure what a partner provider is). That said most people don't bother with price matches because of the hassle.

That is why I open and check using Bookings.com without cashback site and with cashback. If there is a difference then no thanks. You can thank cookies, it makes someone else's wallet fat.

Same thing with ShopBack and Agoda.

  • it's a scam

  • Never had this issue.
Recently did some research on a trip (without cash back active) when we booked prices were the same. One hotel even dropped in price

  • I always end up on Skyscanner no matter where I started. Now I just go there first.

  • cashrewards is the same

  • Just adding to this with evidence. Price gets adjusted to account for cashback.

This actually happened for me this first time today (having read this thread ages ago).

I saw a place for 4 nights $247 pay in advance, activated my shopback and then it went to $280 no pay in advance.

Seemingly activating shopback changes the terms of booking also. I will pay more attention in future.
