Qantas Frequent Flyer Points - Family Transfer

Hey all.

Signed the kids (x2) up for a qantas FF membership last year. We took a few trips, but they don't have a massive points balance. I was looking to consolidate their points into my account so the points can be spent together, but I wondered if anyone had experience with family transfers?

If I transfer points to the 2 accounts (they do not currently have the required 5000 points to make a transfer out), can I transfer the new higher balance of points back to me without penalty? I have read the Ts&Cs, and I don't think it's against the rules, but hopefully someone has experience with it first-hand.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT:

Took the advice below, and it all worked perfectly. Thanks everyone for their tips and contributions, we're not the kind of jet-setting family that travels by plane often, so keeping the points balance on the other cards was less important than consolidation in the end.

gaining extra 10K points isn't going to make a significant difference to your account balance

just leave there until they accumulate a larger points balance.

    • Yeah, not planning any more flights for a while. The worry is the points expiring before they are used.

      Thanks for the reply.

      • Shouldnt expire as long as theyre still earning points.

        • The likelihood of that is small, hence the transfer back to me.

          • @DavoW: How old are they? Do they have phones? If so they can use the Qantas Wellbeing app to earn a few points every day, which will prevent them expiring.

            • @Agarwal: Obviously the other options are better, but it is an option if you want them to keep your points.

            • @Agarwal: Too young for phones. But good idea!

Yes, you can do what you're planning to do. No penalities, not against the rules.

    • Perfect, thank you.

You do it in a chain, transfer enough to first kid then transfer the first kids entire amount to second kid then back to you. This limits the amount of transactions one person is involved in.

    • Good plan, thanks for that!

    Yep have done it.

    Me> wife> nephew in law> sister in-law> me.

    Happy days:)

    • Perfect. Thanks!

  • Get the kids a Woolworths card and use each of their cards enough times so they receive the 1,000 Qantas points from Woolworthsand this will keep the points and account alive for 18 months I think.

    • That's a good tactic, thanks!

It is fine to do as the number of actual transfers is irrelevant, there is only a limit on the amount of points transferred in a year (600k). I have topped up my kids account with my points above 5000 and then transferred all points straight back to me. Very easy, done in minutes.

Otherwise the easiest way to keep their account active that I found was to get them a hoyts movie card and account - (free) - go to the movies once (they don't even need to go) and bam, they get the points and their account remains active for another 18months.
