Need New Tyre for My Road Bike 700x23c - Puncture Resistance Is What I Am Looking for

Hi,

Have previously used Continental 2 Grand Prix 4000S II and am very happy with them. They aren't available in 700x23C size anymore (will 700x25c size fit the 23c Rim?), and also are bit expensive.
Couldn't find any recent posts on OzB either.
I mainly need something that is puncture resistance somewhat, and Grand Prix 4000S did a great job while it lasted.

Any recommendation on a cheap new pair?

  • I got sick of punctures, so now use Schwalbe Marathon Plus on all my bikes and have never had a puncture since, and I ride on some crap ground

They are not the cheapest and also quite heavy, but worth it IMO

    • keep in mind the harder compound of these means they can be both less comfortable as well as slippery in the wet (and dry!).

    • Yeah, these self-healing tyres are pretty good. I can't remember what I have but it's something similar. (Will see when I get home)

      • I don't know about selfhealing, but the layer of blue stuff on them is very elastic impenetrable rubber. I remember I first saw them in a bike shop where they had a display with a strip and some drawing pins and nails and were inviting people to try and push them through. So I got sucked in by that and it seem to work and I have never had a puncture (used to get a lot on my commute as ride through some bad surfaces with a lot of rubbish

    • Thanks, Ordered Schwalbe Marathon Plus from Chainreactioncycles, hopefully it won't take too long to deliver.

      • Got delivered earlier today, and fitted them both. They feel very sturdy, don't think friction will be a problem, has lot of tread.

        • any update on performance and obviously punctures

    • How are they performing so far? I have Vittoria Zaffiro Pro garphene 2.0 700x30c fitted and I am confused because i don't want to get stucked on home-work commute.

Not necessarily cheap, but I moved to the Continental Gatorskins on my road bikes and have had very few punctures.

    • These are great, but a bitch to mount.

Most tyres are a bitch to mount on the Mavic Carbones on one of my bikes. Conversely, tyres mount easily on a set of Aerospokes on my single gear road bike.

  • 25c will fit on your rim just fine.
the only issue might be frame clearance - if the 23c one only just fits

  • If it fits definitely go a larger tyre, more comfort and better rolling resistance. A 28 would be great.

  • I just went from 25 to 28 on my road bike, fitted yesterday. Rim is probably fine but check clearance, especially if you have rim brakes - mine only just fit.

I was planning on gator skins but went with Grand Prix 4 seasons for extra grip/comfort, while still getting great puncture resistance.

Paid around $100 for the pair after $20 first customer discount at wiggle.

  • Stick with the continental. The 25 will fit no problem.

  • Go for the 25 if you like the tyres - as long as it will fit the frame.

‘Everybody’ is using 25s now. Can run them at slightly lower pressure which is more comfortable and actually reduces rolling resistance on anything that isn’t perfectly smooth.

I’ll be switching to 25s when I wear out the current pair on my commuter, but I need to do more commuting first!

  • I use thick slicks. Never had a puncture.

  • If you're not bothered by weight and don't want to buy new tyres, that Slime stuff that you put in the inner tube seems to work fine. Bottle does 2 tyres, $15 at Repco or Big-W.

    • Tyre liners are another alternative. Been running hem for years in my commuter tyres. I’ve been running Mr Tuffy liners at about $20 per pair. Only flats I’ve had were pinch flats from hitting a kerb too hard or having low pressure. They are significantly less messy and won’t block up the valves like slime does.

      • I use Slime & liners, I'm really really sick of punctures. Bring back solid tyres.

I ride in areas with lots of thorns, bindis, etc and still got punctures with the liners, adding the Slime solved that. Haven't has any mess or value issues, but yeah the Slime does make checking pressure a bit annoying when it squirts a bit of muck out. I can live with that.

Neither will help with pinch flats, haven't has one since I started using the Slime but i guess I'll find out eventually.
