MS Melbourne Bike Ride

I'm thinking about entering the MS Melbourne 30km Charity Cycle in late March, but this is my first ever cycle event, and we're entering with an 8 year-old and a 2 year-old in a child seat on my husband's bike, I was just wondering if anyone's done it before and do you think it's possible for our family to do it? We've done a lot of 15km rides to the grandparents' place since the start of the year, have a break, then back, so I'm not too concerned with the 30km total, but is the Westgate a difficult climb? It's an amazing privilege and opportunity to ride on the Westgate so we don't want to miss this chance.

Thanks so much.

Is the 8yo riding on his own. The westgate will be hard for him… its an incline that never seems to end.

Otherwise 30KM is not much at all, especially if you have done 15Kms regularly. Would suggest a bit more practice - slowly increase from 15 KM to 20Kms - you don't necessarily need to practice 30Kms beforehand.

    • Yes, he has his own 24 inch MTB with 21 speeds and he's pretty good in terms of understanding them and knowing when to shift up or down. I don't mind stopping if he needs a break but I don't want to be a nuisance to other riders, and I don't know what the rules are like in regards to stopping on the Westgate.

No idea about the actual course, but have a crack at 25-30km this weekend without too much break. See if you can find a decent similar local hill to test out as well.

Have been in a few different charity rides and they usually cater well to novice riders. There is no rush, allthe fast guys race out in front.

  • Thank you guys. We've decided to give it a go, life is too short to not try out new things just because of fear. Worst case is we push and walk our bikes along the bridge. Very unlikely as we'll be training hard in the next month.
