We have hundreds of Dell notebooks of various Latitude models within the ANZ region that we look after and I've been overall happy with their reliability. Performance is always subjective, we buy standard hardware configs for our organisation and there's always some that aren't happy but as the saying goes, you can't please everyone.
We do have the occasional failure but as a percentage it's very small and would be the same with any brand. Most last well past their warranty period and many aren't treated all that well by their users. Service is typically very good but then we do pay for NBD and are a global enterprise buyer with Dell.
If I were buying for myself I'd certainly at least consider Dell and have in fact recently bought one of their 7070 micro desktops for use at home.
Run an XPS 13, 3yrs old, no issues really (wifi driver had a 5GHz issue for a month or two in its second year but was promptly fixed with a driver update).
Haven't had any issues so haven't had many run-ins with customer service, but order took a bit longer than expected to arrive, and their hold times were quite long (~20 mins).
Dell make cheap-as-possible units to compete at the bottom end of the market and high-end workstation like the XPS with units at all levels in between. This means a big variance in build quality, materials used and features.
Purchased a Dell Inspiron back in 2011 and it has had heavy usage on a regular basis.
It's still running fine after all of these years.
Have just purchased a Dell G7 from one of the recent ebay deals.
It arrived today and I must say that the quality of the touchpad is a bit disappointing.
+great service (business grade)
-shit quality
This sums up dell pretty much.
I can get my laptop repaired onsite within one day.
But I had to get my Alienware 15 R3 repaired over 4 times. 3 being motherboard changes and 1 being DC port change as it started smoking.
Not sure about Dell but with their other company Alienware. They allow you to open up your device and mess around without voiding your warranty. Dell even has a part store so that you can do your own repair.
Edit I also have a Dell Latitude 6000 that still works to this day.
I've had a Dell XPS for 2 years.
It's been flawless. No issues at all. It's as fast as the day I got it.
The Latitude range are made for businesses, so they are made of better quality.
I have an old E5500 still going strong & have just purchased a re-furbished 7470 for $456 from Oz Amazon,
I should get it in a day or 3
This is very subjective. There will be people whom have never had an issue with Dell and others who think it's the worst thing ever. It's completely anecdotal and won't help you.
I have used this Latitude 7280 for couple years and it's been flawless. Colleague has the same model and had plenty issues till they replaced it.
