Is this a good option and price for a Swann CCTV security package. Had the 2mp version in mind as cheaper(8cam, 1TB HD $499), but the 5mp captures more detail (6cam, 2TB HD $549.95 through Swann Ebay site + CB) . I can also add additional cameras later to the 5mp set.

Great. The only thing I was thinking which I am trying to check is whether the night vision is in colour or black and white. Thought maybe the colour would be better to help with working out colour of car at night. The 2mp has colour night vision. Not sure about the 5Mp version
From what I can remember it is only Black and White. If you want colour you could buy additional cameras which have flood lights installed on them.
Yeah the 2mp has the flood light and thus colour night vision, but not these 5Mp ones. Trade off. Better pic quality or color, but not as detailed. MMM
Also how is the DVR connected to a screen to access the video?. Is there some remote or it gets connected via a computer through a usb or hmdi. No nothing about these systems and how to hook up from the box.
There are multiple methods to stream the video to a viewable source. You can use your phone and download the Swann Security App:

Android
You can connect an HDMI or VGA cable to the DVR to view and configure settings that way.
You can also configure it and view the stream on your mac or pc as well.
Mac
You can even use your google home device and stream it to your chrome cast.

Answered your own question then. Unable to understand why people spend $2,000 on a daily use device but okay with spending $5-600 on a security camera system… To each their own.
The price point of the security cam is not the same as the $2k phone though. You can easily spend $2k on the cams as well. Yes you can spend your money on whatever you want if you can afford those high end items. Most people can't and just want to have the latest. All good to them.
What's wrong with Swann. It's Better than Hikvision and Dahua in terms of security IMO. Both Hikavision and I think Dahua is owned by the Chinese government and you know how much china loves to spy on its people and other countries. Plus there are way too many scripts for hacking Hikavision DVR and NVR. Even the Australian Government is starting to remove all Hikavision and Dahua Cameras after the Chinese Spy Whistleblower.
I think from what I have read some OZbers dislike the following:
1. Swann make crap products that don't last.
2. The Tech is low tech BNC cables.
3. Swann don't honour the warranty.
4. The phone app doesn't work well or at all with the live stream access.
5. It's expensive and cheaper alternatives
I did ask for alternatives, but non-forthcoming. You only hear when people aren't happy, but there have been good reviews of the product, maynot not of the phone app. Sure the set up and the viewing software looks reasonable.
This is a good price. Go for it. Recently installed this for a friend and she was happy with it. Only thing I didn't like was the 70 Degree viewing angle. But other than that it is very easy to install. BNC supplied cables are also thin so you will only need to drill small holes.
Swann PIR and Thermal Detect on this model doesn't work as well and you will have to set the sensitivity to 1.
