Does an RSA Certificate Expire?

Hi all,

I got my RSA in 2008 and have never used it.
The VCGLR websites states an RSA Certificate does not expire but workers need to complete a refresher every three years.
As I never used mine and it is well after three years, is it still valid?

I used the tool on the website and it just says that I have not done a refresher.

  • As far as I'm aware, yes though it could change from state to state. I had to redo mine in NSW, was an online refresher course. They sent me through an email close when it was about to expire, I just went through it and was done.

I worked at “a” casino and was required to have an RSA and we had to undergo refresher training every few years. It was usually a 5 to 10 mins read of the latest updates brochure and some multiple choice questions.

If you have not kept up to date with RSA, it may not be valid or up to date with changes with current legislation, but like I said, getting it updated shouldn’t be an issue.

It’s easy enough to do the whole course anyway. I don’t live in Vic anymore, but in NSW, they were offering the RSA course as an online course and there was no charge for it. I would imagine it would be just as easy to get it again if you required it in Vic.

Edit: Just found my old certificate number from my last RSA (way back in 2011) from the VCGLR website and used it to sit the refresher course online. So, if you have your details, you can get your old certificate number, you can then use that to see when the last time you updated it and then do the update module.

Downside is that the RSG cert. seems to have changed some time in 2017 and now that requires a face to face training module and actual gaming employment. So looks like I wont be updating my RSG tonight…

    • It'll all change thanks to COVID19. It's 2020 and there's no reason for us to stick to the archaic regulation, I hope. VIC seems to be the most priciest and strictest when it comes to RSA, $60 for RSA cert compared to ~$20 for the other states (that offers online courses prior to COVID19 outbreak too).

Do the refresher and you're good to go.

RSA certificates are like wine, they get better with age.

    Cheers!

  • In QLD, they don't expire any more, haven't expired for anyone that got one in the last ~5 years. If a QLD one says Statement of Attainment, it never expires, and no refresher course needed.

    You answered your own question.
If you can search, so can a potential employer. Would they hire you or someone who has done the refresher course? I would expect the latter, as it also indicates you aren't or haven't been employed in a situation that required the RSA.

It doesn't expire per se, but there could be implications.
