Does Anyone Have Experience with Boost Mobile Refurb Phones? or Know of Decent Alternatives?

I'm in need of a new phone and I've decided I'm switching back to iOS from Android. Phone plans seem to be an insane rip off as I'm currently with TPG Mobile on 10 gigs a month for 30 dollars and never actually go over my data usage so I don't need the dollar per gig value of more expensive plans, plans also seem to just make the phone more expensive than some bargains outright. I am 100 percent going to be switching prepaid plans to boost as TPG coverage has been awful for me and I've heard great things about Boost's coverage plus their data value is absurdly decent. The only thing left for me is to find an affordable iPhone.

I don't plan on going any lower than the iPhone X as my current Android phone has a full screen design which I sadly can't turn away from. Upon further inspecting Boost's website I've found they actually sell refurb phones with the help of a company named Alegre. Their iPhone X's are listed at 769 dollars which seems like a great price as iPhone's just cost way too much. The only issue I'm running into is that I can't seem to find many people with experience buying refurbs via boost at least online anyway. They do come with a 1 year warranty which just sounds too good to be true for a refurb but it seems like all they do is test used phones and resell them rather than fully refurbish with apple parts. I can't actually find any evidence stating otherwise.

So my question today is has anyone had experience purchasing refurbs from boost? Or does anyone know of any decent alternatives?

  • If your requirements are:
    - iPhone
    - full screen design
    - as cheap as possible
then the iPhone XR might be a better bet than the iPhone X

    • I did try looking for an XR but can't seem to find many places selling them

I would rather pay $999 for a brand new XS than $769 for a refurb X.

Cheaper if you can find discounted JB gift cards.

    • My mate did just pick this one up but 1000 dollars still seems like a lot

Agreed but it’s brand new and a newer model for only $230 more. Yes it will cost $1000 but you are already spending $770. The additional cost is all that matters. You obviously want this phone to last for as long as possible so I personally think it’s worth the extra cost but upto you!

I’m also on the TPG 10GB/$30 plan but moving to Boost as I realised im not using 10GB either and there’s much better deals around. I got the recent 80GB/$150 deal (will work out to less than $11/month).

I’m also wanting to upgrade my phone (from iPhone 7) and was looking at refurbs. I’ve been keeping my eye on Phonebot - they seem to have a relatively good rep, with prompt service and 12mo warranties for most phones.

    Cheaper than Boost:
    iPhone XS 64GB (A Grade) - $879
    iPhone X 256GB (A Grade) - $719
    iPhone X 64GB (Like New) - $699
    iPhone X 64GB (A Grade) - $649

My understanding is the A Grade shouldn’t have any noticeable scratches on the screen. I know some people have received ones with scratches, but the guys seem to take them back/replace them pretty quickly. I think the main risk with refurbs is crappy battery life.

PS I’m not associated with Phonebot at all, just sharing what I know since my situation is so similar to yours.

+1 Have bought two A grades from phonebot, both spotless, both older than the phones OP is looking at.

The only negative was the free accesories were either missing or for a different model with one of them.
