Comparing 2 of The Cheapest S20 Ultra Plans, Optus and Woolworths Mobile, Am I Missing Something?

With similar sets

Both Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G Cosmic Grey 128GB, both 24 months,

Woolworths mobile is 20GB per month, and Optus is only 10GB per month

But Optus says minimum cost $2037.72 and will cost me $122.28 per month

Woolworths on the other hand says minimum cost is $2082, but will only cost me $105.08 per month with twice as much data

Seems Woolies beat Optus by a lot here, am I missing anything or Woolies mobile is just that good?

Thanks!

Possibly the wrong website to be asking advice for a $1500 phone.

Optus hasn't been competitive for a while. They let their NVMO's do the grunt work.

Woolies are budget no frills. That's the service you receive.

Eh, not necessarily (regarding the $1500 phone comment). Lots of us scroll past the "Half price tooth picks" and come back for the decent deals on electronics. Hell, I learnt about the Tesla price drop on Ozbargain which definitely put the car on my radar.

I think there's plenty of people on here who don't mind spending the $$ on products. They just have to hide in the shadows and pretend to be poor and homeless.

For me I'm more likely to search ozbargain for an expensive purchase rather than a low cost purchase.

    • Any idea which optus NVMO has good service?

  • Neither of these add up to begin with though….

    • It'll be 1 month phone plan fee + 24 device repayments = minimum contract amount. Lots of changes with phone plans you may have missed.

  • Woolies has $250 instant discount(-$10.42 off a month)

first picture tells you (Save $250)

    $105.08 per month
    $30 plan + $85.50 handset- $10.42 discount

Dont forget Cash Rewards has $75 cashback from Woolies mobile too (-$3.12 off a month)

Factor that in from Monthly payment that means basically $101.95 per month :)

    hope this helps

    • Might go with that too, more savings

  • I tried out the exact plan as you did and I know what's wrong. This is what shows on the total section:

Min. cost $2037.72, includes device repayments over 24 months and one month of your chosen plan fees

It says it there, the minimal cost is $2037,72, which is the device amount for 24 months + ONE MONTH of your chosen plan fees.

The phone itself costs $83.28 per month. Multiply by 24 months, that's $1,998,72.

The plan is $39 per month.

    $1998.72 + 39 = $2037.72

Actually you're paying $2934.72 (122.28 * 24) if you're going to honour the 24 months for the phone. You can bail out anytime since Optus has switched to a month-to-month plan, similar to what Vodafone uses, but only if you pay out the remaining cost of the device. You're bound 24 months for the phone, but the SIM plan itself is month-to-month.

    Hope that makes sense.

    • I do 2 months phone cycle, had s5, s7, s9.

Going with woollies this time and ditching optus

  • Just be aware that you are buying a 5G phone but MVNOs such as Woolworths mobile do not (currently at least) have access to 5G. Optus do though being the network operator.

This may not matter to you but thought I'd point it out.

    • I see, thanks, looking up 5G status even on Optus, we're not there yet lol.

  • I'm also looking at switching from Optus to Woolies mobile. But looking at the S20 4G, which is cheaper (on a plan) than the previous year's handsets for the current promotion (+10% off one shop a month + free Galaxy buds + cash rewards).

Feels a little "too good to be true". Am I missing anything, or is this just a case of Woolies trying to drum up a larger user base and leveraging the saving from being a MVNO?
