I am looking to buy a phone in a watch format for my almost 8yo daughter.
I just want to be able to buy a prepaid sim with a mobile provider and plan of my choosing, but not have an actual mobile phone for her to have. Ideally I would like her to have it at school, but I can almost guarantee a mobile phone will be stolen if left in her bag, and she is clumsy, so it will no doubt be lost or broken if she needs to keep it in her pocket. (hence the watch format appeals, as she wont need to take it off)
We only intend on using it for the occasional text message or phone call between parents, or for emergency reasons. I am aware of the "moochies" and "spacetalk" watches, but I was wanting something a little more affordable…
Smart Watch with Phone Recommendations for 8yo

No.
Be a parent and teach her not to be clumsy? Or let her be clumsy and learn from it?
WTF does an 8 year old bed with a smart watch?!
lol. When you give a young child yournipad to watch Peppa Pig for hours this is what they demand later.
Some schools do not allow 'Smart Watches', although they are generally ok with smart bands.
Info: my 8 year came home from school one day and commented her school wont allow smart watches but Fitbit bands etc were ok.
Schools dont like the money that can be tied up in these items plus students with families that cannot afford these things can feel left out and can cause issues etc.
I believe the op is looking for a safety watch. The numbers that can be called and the usage of the watch is controlled by the parents. They very limited in functionality as well basically can call text and parent can track location on some models.
You can get plenty of no name brands on amazon. Just search 4g or 3G watch

Surely the school will call you if something happens?
Exactly.
And the parents can contact the school if there is a real 'emergency' that needs to be relayed to the child.
@ missspeckles…as she wont need to take it off
Think you are dreaming.
Also NO eight year old needs a mobile phone or watch phone.
Have you seen any of the warnings online about how easily these cheap watch phones can be hacked?
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kids-smartwatches-on-amazon-can…If I had an 8 year old I would be getting them a device with find my phone/watch GPS options. That way you can send the tyke out, know where she is and send her a message when you want her to be elsewhere. I’ve got an Apple phone but it is too many bells and whistles for a kid. I don’t know why people think the kid doesn’t need a phone! The ability to know where they are, to contact them and know they are safe is terrific. You can get pretty cheap phones and child friendly plans. Get a cheap phone and teach her how to look after it. The “find my phone” works well for locating a lost device.
That technology only tells you where the phone/watch is, not necessarily where the child is.
In my view, an 8 year old should be monitored by the parent when outside of the home or when not in a similar environment such as at school. But that is just me.True it does. But if the phone is somewhere you think it shouldn’t be you can contact it to see if the kid is there as well. This is allowing the parent to monitor where the kid is. It allows you to set limits on where the kid can be and a reminder that you will be contacting them to confirm positions. I hate to pull the “when I was a kid” card but we were allowed a bit of “roamage” latitude, having this technology would’ve given my parents a bit of piece of mind.
Just buy a $20 - $40 phone
