Best Way to Get to Kathmandu

Hi all,

I'm currently researching the best way to get to Kathmandu with two kids (teens). I'm hoping to get a direct flight with a layover and then another direct flight to Kathmandu.

Order of preference for departing airport in Aus is:

Gold Coast
Brisbane
Sydney

I read that Nepal Airlines are commencing flights to and from Kathmandu to Guangzhou on March 20th 2020 so that might be a good option, eg fly to Guangzhou from Brisbane, layover in Guangzhou and then fly direct to Kathmandu.

I'm trying to do it on a budget but am willing to spend a bit more to lesson the overall transit time.

Google Flights seems like a pretty good place to check out direct/1 stop flights, any other suggestions?

For more obscure destinations I usually Wikipedia the destination airports list of destinations, then work backwards. Another trick using google flights is search for Gold Coast - Asia or Kathmandu-Asia this will show cheap options from those airports then connect the dots.
I think maybe it’s Bangkok with a transit in KL on one ticket then stay the night and fly to to Kathmandu the next day on different ticket. $8-900

    • Thanks, I didn't know you could filter all of Asia.

If it was my money I would go Thai Airways with an over nighter in Bangkok either way. Full service airline, good (and cheap) accommodation in Bangkok and no visa required.

    • Thanks that sounds like a good plan, I'll check it out.

Just had a quick look and this looks like the perfect option. Thanks again!

  • Guangzhou is in China - most countries are slowly but surely completely banning flights to and from China. I don't think those bans would be lifted by March 2020. Keep that in mind as most travel insurance won't cover getting stuck in China now that it is a known event.

    • This is true, consider also that many airlines are cutting flights to nearby destinations too, so anything you book now might not be what you end up with.
Given the choice, I would think it cautious to leave it a few more months before travelling.

      • Thanks for both the replies, travel isn't until Dec this year so there's plenty of time to see how all that pans out.

It's much more exciting to travel halfway around the world to buy a puffer vest!

  • B1 to Warringah mall

  • you want to fly via china?. cool.

    • travel not until Dec. Lots of time to see what happens.

      • Book in advance with maybe limited travel insurance?

        • Most airlines are blocked out so far ahead but I'll check it out some more.

  • flyscoot gold coast to chennai, then use the domestic airlines to get to kathmandu. <1k each way & 16 hrs flight time.
