Replacement PC Power Supply Recommendations

PC was working fine yesterday. Shut down. When I went to turn the PC on the morning nothing. Noticed only fans (CPU/Case) were always running when power supply connected and turned on. Just wouldn't turn on.

Tested PC with another power supply (Thermaltake TT-500NL2NK-A) and it turned on, boots up, shuts down and turned off like it should. So suspect that the power supply I am currently using (Corsair HX650 80+ Gold Modular) is at fault.

Looking to get a similar modular replacement power supply. Don't want to use the Thermaltake as its a basic OEM power supply and doesn't get very good ratings. Just not sure what to get. Any recommendations welcomed.

PC has 6 internal sata devices. GTX 1070 Graphics card and i7-3770 CPU.

  • Without knowing hardware, hard to tell. Just buy like for like I suppose? There is a plethora of PSU calculators online that might assist? Also is your faulty PSU under warranty at all, just a thought?

When did you buy the Corsair? It should have a 7 year warranty.

  • If the Thermaltake is otherwise not being used, you'd be borderline insane to buy a new one.

Also, how old is the Corsair? you might be able to claim warranty/ACL

The Corsair HX650 has a 7 year warranty - maybe still under warranty?

  • I just bought an evga supernova g3 650w and I am very happy with it. Fully modular and very silent.

  • Thanks for the info. Didn't know the PSU had a 7 year warranty. Found the original purchase receipt for the HX650 power supply and it is indeed still under warranty.

    Purchase July 29th 2013 for $138.89.

Anyone know where/who I need to contact for the warranty claim on the PCU in Australia?

    • Can always try the store first. They may fob you off to Corsair after that. Try whatever is easiest for you first.

      • I just rang the retailer where it was purchased and thay said they can handle the warranty but it will have to be sent away to Corsair USA. WHicxh can to take anywahere up to 2 months or more. Was wondering if there was a quicker way to do this?

Maybe talk to the store and say you can't wait that long. You could always ask for a refund and purchase another one? If you really want to use the the original Corsair one maybe you just get through the two months using the Thermaltake for a little while?

Edit: On second thought it's probably better to get a refund. You'd be getting a refurbished one back. New ones should be better and have a better warranty on top of that.

        • The retailer is going way above and beyond to accept warranty, just use your cheap replacement for a couple of months then get the new one.

        • talk to corsair, my friend was able to get a replacement upon proof of destroy the old unit.

          • @Richardc: How would I go about that. Just contact support in regards to a Warranty (RMA) - Replacing My Product cenquiry?

        • No way known they will be shipping a power supply back to the USA. See chenrenchun's comment

OP and others. The best list and tiers of PSUs is here

    https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-4…

The best budget models available in oz will be the current Corsair CX line. CX650 about $95. I'm also a huge fan of EVGA at the top end but their budget line is trash.

OP, as a final test, disconnect all sata drives (if they're spindle). If it boots fine then the PSU is fine. It's just reduced in efficiency over time. That's a lot of sata drives to spin up and requires a big burst of juice when powering up. You should still be able to get it replaced under warranty based on this.

    • The prices of PSU have gone up so much. Even the entry level decent PSUs now cost 130$ + shipping.

  • Forgot I had a Seasonic G-550 80+ gold 550w modular power supply in another PC I haven't used for a while. I'll probably just use that. Then contact Corsair and see what they have to say. If they can cover the warranty return or do the visual destruction proof. Otherwise I'll just send it to the place of purchase and get them to do the warranty like I said above.

    • Hi, Finally what did you end up doing? Thanks.
