Japan - Mt. Fuji / Lake Kawaguchiko Accomodation (Any Trips Whilst Travelling in Japan Will Also Be Appreciated)

Good morning guys!

Going to Japan next month and wanting to visit and stay at night somewhere near Mt. Fuji or Lake Kawaguchiko.

Already have recommendations for accomodation in Oaska (Agora Hotel) and Tokyo (Gracery) but need one for Mt. Fuji/Lake Kawaguchi.

First time to Japan, so if you have of your person tips - please do tell :)

Thank you,

    …wat?

Personal advice before arriving in Japan.

    • Get data on your phone - either by a travel Sim card or a pocket wi-fi modem. You'll need it to…
    • …use Google Translate and Google Maps. The former has a camera function that can auto-translate text on the fly and the latter has detailed route guidance on trains, which is paramount given how complex Japan's transportation options can be.
    • Read this for basic phrases - https://www.kotaku.com.au/2019/10/five-words-you-must-know-b…
    • Cash is still king in Japan. Exchange some here in Aus, and use your preferred international-freindly card to withdraw from ATMs over there as backup.
    • Never commit a crime - especially in Japan. Even petty crime like shoplifting can see you locked up for 23 days, as you're guilty until proved innocent.

The whole "cash is king" is completely overblown, even moreso in major cities.

I've been to Japan 3 times over the last 3 years and apart from using cash to recharge my Suica and entrance fees to some attraction and temples, I used my credit card everywhere else.

      • Convenience stores all take credit cards. If you need cash you can always withdraw from their ATMs or from Japan Post ATMs
      • Supermarkets and department stores accept credit cards
      • An ever increasing number of restaurants accept credit card, even ones you wouldn't suspect they do. Given the Olympics is around the corner I can only anticipate this trend increasing.
      • Hyperdia > Google Maps for transport.
  • I stayed at the Mt. Fuji Guest House & Cafe Kikka-ke in Sep 2018 while travelling with my son. It's about 2km (walkable?) from Fuji Q Highland… if you happen to be going there. I'd stay there again, but being a "guest house" it might not be everyone's cup of tea. (8600 yen for 2 adults)

The next night we stayed at Fuji Kawaguchiko Onsen Togawasou. Good location for the lake. Definitely a retro feel to the place, so again, might not suit everyone. (10800 yen for 2 adults, incl brekky)

  • Thank you guys.

Budget is around 500/600 a night for March.

    Ideally want a private onsen.

Hi we stayed at Fuji View Hotel and it was amazing. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Ask for a room on the highest floor with a view of the lake and of Mount Fuji. We had a spectacular suite, they upgraded us. It was absolutely fantastic. It was our first time in an Onsen which is at the hotel. We had an amazing view and it's such a beautiful place. We hired a car and drove all around the Fuji area, but we did stay around the local area for about 4 days including Hokone, Izu Peninsula, Mt Omaru and Izunokuni Panorama Park. We had the best time!! Have a fab trip!! We'd go back tomorrow if we could!!

I can very highly recommend Hana Hostel at Fujisan Station. Easily one of the most amazing hosts we've ever had in Japan. It's pretty popular but if it is available it's a great option.

There is a free shuttle bus which runs from fujiko to kawaguchiko station very regularly. It also stops at Fuji Q.
