LG Chem Safety Video (Don’T Buy It. Don’T Sell It. Stay Safe.)

Hey folks this video by LG Chem has been doing the rounds on social media. What are your thought on the matter?

LG don't want Lithium cells to be used outside of battery packs, Similar warning is found on Sony cells.

I am going to put the majority of blame on vapers lol most incidents but not all that make the news are from people that vape. Vaping is probably the biggest group of people that regularly use lithium cells that are not in a packs. Its probably not fair to group all vapers in the same group some will be better educated than others.
While a large number of other hobbies also use Lithium based cells on a regular basis.

Should vapers be better educated on the use and handling of Lithium cells?

I have got mates who vape and i ended up helping one with educating them on Lithium cells as his two Sony VTC5s where at 2.5v each and he was still using them. The cutoff voltage for the VTC5 is 2.5v i think but they have hardly no capacity lower than 3v. So i told him to charge the cells at around 3v min. Also made him buy a proper charger.

    Free portable fireworks.

  • If they don’t get it from here, they are going to get it from there. Video was a bit silly, misleading and scaremongering, as bare cells rarely ever do that in someone’s pocket, especially LiIo. LiPo battery’s are way more dangerous and I’ve never had one do that in my pocket…

    What a load of shit.

Not just aimed at Vapers but also people who DIY their electronics, as well as independant mobile repair stores.

Louis Rossman is a computer repair dude (he's well known for a variety of reasons both good and bad, however his Youtube channel covers a lot about Mac repairs). Here's his take on it:

IMO: They're trying to say that bare cells ordered off eBay is dangerous and that end consumers shouldn't handle them. I don't think LG is specifically targeting vaping (but they are dissing vapers) moreso they are discouraging people from buying it because they don't want to be held responsible when your battery powered DIY projects blows up and causes injuries.

I agree the ad is rubbish.

I know it's not targeted at vaping but having cells blowing up in people's pockets who use them for vaping is not helping.

I use lithium all the time I also have a range of ways to test my cells which many who vape don't. Bit of a generalisation I know. The ones that mod the vapes will have multimeters I guess they love high amps probably own clamp meters.

While if we are talking about a member of the electronics community who also use lithium cells they will most likely have a multimeter and a hobby charger or DC power supply.

  • As long as they don't bring it up onto planes I don't really care. If you use li batteries treat them with respect or you'll receive stupid prizes.
