POTENT

Gday,

Have been searching for a GPU for my HTPC for sometime. I had 3 requirements.

  • Output 4k.
  • TU116 Turing NVENC video encoder (only available on 1650 super and above nvidia cards).
  • Power connector on the end of the card rather than the side (case height restrictions).

Anyway full specs here.

I beleive this is the cheapest the GTX 1650 super has been. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  • whats special about the video encoder

    • Its same one as the rest of the RTX range of GPUs

You can leverage it for streaming on twitch, mixer etc. But the best part is that the NVENC encoder chip is separate and therefor adds no additional load to the gpu. Meaning you can stream with little to no impact on your gaming performance.

It was important to me because I stream on twitch and wanted to be able to stream from the couch with my HTPC.

  • If only these didnt need 6pin power, it would have been perfect…

    • That was a big issue for me. My HTPC case just wouldnt fit any card with a power connector on the side. So it was either run a pcie power card only. Or find a card with power on the end of the PCB. Which was tough because its not a spec you can search for. I had to manually go through product images to check and spoilers this is the only one of the GTX and RTX cards Ive found with this power setup.

    • Some 1650 cards don’t need any external power

      • Yeah but super is a great card for only a few $ more. Way better bang for buck but requires power.

        • Some of the 1650 cards dont need power. But unfortunately, all of the 1650super cards do. The 1650 super is also a pretty tasty jump up in performance. The regular 1650 is a bit underpowered.

  • Why would your HTPC need such powerful encoder? Surely NVDEC on a less powerful cheaper card would be more cost effective?

I want to be able to stream on twitch on the couch if the mood ever swung me. I have a much more powerful machine in my office for my main gaming. But every now and then its nice to relax on the couch with a controller. The TU116 chip allows me to take most of the load off the CPU and GPU allowing for a minimal drop in performance.

Also you can use NVENC for PLEX server acceleration apparently. Which is something I will look into.

Another factor is that my case cannot fit cards that need 6 or 8 pin power on the side of the card. So it was either grab a 1050ti for $100 on gumtree that doesnt need 6 pin power or find a card that has power on the end of the PCB like this one does. The nvenc chip and jump in performance is worth it imo. I also used a $20 ebay coupon I got in my inbox making it even cheaper for me.

  • How good is this at 4k

    • We will see. I am not expecting much at 4k for gaming to be honest prob have to drop down to 1440p or 1080p my 4k TV is capped at 60hz so I wont be going for high refresh. But for movies, youtube and tv it will handle it no sweat.

Hardware unboxed has a great review of the 1650 super on youtube if you wanna see some numbers.

      • Still not much an upgrade for 1060, right?

        • Absolutely not worth the upgrade from a 1060 6gb IMO Hardware unboxed has a good review on the 1650 super if you wanna look at numbers. I'd keep saving your money. the 3000 series cards are rumored to hit mid-year. If it were me I would hold out. Which is exactly what I am going todo with my main systems card. I have a gtx 1080 and right now there isnt a card I can upgrade too that isnt going to make me poor.

  • How about ASUS Radeon RX 580 DUAL 8GB OC GDDR5? $324 before discount.

    • Personally I wouldnt buy a new RX580. Can be had for about $100 on the used market if you look around.

      • I'd disagree, having fought one to play more than 5 minutes when under load before crashing. Couldn't tell if it was drivers or hardware. Swapped for a 1660 under warranty and had no issues since.

        Just my experience though, YMMV

        • +1

You mean you had issues with your RX580? after all these years they are pretty tried and true with drivers well and truely matured. So if you had issues more than likely it was just a bad card if you had it updated properly. But 1660 would be an upgrade over a RX580 for sure.

          • +1

@Justin Powell: That's why I figured it was a hardware issue - flickering under load, game crashing, as well as driver crashing. Never did it when idle or watching YouTube etc, which originally had me stumped.

And yes, I agree not disagree lol

    • Terrible deal. 1650 super is faster and way more power efficient.
