Recommendations for TV Antenna Installer to TV Reception Problems - Melbourne

Does anyone have a recommendations for a TV Antenna Installer to fix reception problems or install new antenna? Prahran/South Yarra area.

Looking back in forum posts for years ago I saw some recommendations for Speedy TV Antennas. Has anyone used speedytvantennas.com.au recently?

Depending on weather conditions or time of day getting pixelation on main TV and not getting all channels on another TV. Seriously thinking of cutting the cable with Foxtel and getting a Fetch Box. I will need good reception for that.

Over many years various TV Antenna guys have added to our problems. Year ago replaced old antenna, but new one installed in bad location on roof. Next guy told us amplifier in roof space would fix reception problems. It didn't.

I need someone to give recommendation to sort what's needed and give a reasonable quote to the job (hopefully OzBargain price).

I have been getting really good information and suggestions about TV reception and antennas. Has anyone got any recommendations for TV antenna specialists?

Thanks for your help in advance!

  • try mr antenna.
it won't the cheapest but they have glowing review i WP.

    • Thanks for the recommendation! I was hoping to stay away from franchise operations because the service can depend on the franchisee in your area. But I will certainly have a look at them.

  • Sounds like a weak digital signal, which can be caused by atmospheric conditions.
Have you checked with your neighbors to see what their reception is like?

    • The ones I have checked with are getting good reception. Most have their antenna pointing at Dandenong towers, some are pointing at Como Centre Tower in South Yarra. Mine is pointing at Dandenong. The bad reception started to happen years ago when installer took down antenna attached to mast on Chimney and place it lower on roof.

  • Do you get a local paper there try looking in the classifieds for local installers is there anything like trees or buildings near the antenna that could interfere with the signal acma website has some good info on tv reception

    • I haven't looked at local paper but will do. My first action is to always Google :)

There is a two story house a few doors up which I think could be the problem when the old antenna was taken down from high on roof attached to chimney and placed lower on roof line.

Prahran is a good area.See 'More coverage information' and 'Antenna setup guide'. How does your aerial and direction compare with their recommendations?

  • Thanks! The map shows a line pointing towards Mt Dandenong Tower. My antenna is pointing in that direction but as I've mentioned in a previous reply their could be interference from a house three doors up from me. That's why I was thinking I needed someone who could look at the situation and assess what's really needed, not just say "you need a new antenna".

    • Do you have the “right” type of antenna? You need a UHF antenna and not the older VHF or composite types. Get a high gain antenna and/or a signal booster inline as well.

      • It's a composite type. So high gain is absolutely looking like the answer but I was trying to find a recommendation for an installer who would give an honest appraisal of my situation and not just go to the default answer of "a new antenna"

  • Can you get it put back on the chimney?

    • It's possible to put back on the chimney. But not for me to do it and it was beyond the overweight installer who managed to get the original antenna off the chimney. He installed the new one lower on the roof. Said putting it back on the chimney could damage it in high winds. All my neighbours have theirs on chimney

Holy shit… free to air TV still exists?? I honestly can not remember the last time I put any tv in this house onto any TV station. Maybe 2 years ago? It’s all YouTube, Plex, Netflix and Disney+ here.

    • Ha, I hear you :)
But I'm thinking of cutting the cord with Foxtel and getting a Fetch box. Would be mainly used to record ABC and SBS.

  • We are getting very similar issues in Fitzroy. In our case it is fine for a fair amount of time then we get pixelation. Sometimes just glitches and sometimes unwatchable. Our neighbour says she is fine but she doesn’t watch much tv. Ours could, certainly, be high buildings.

  • Band 5 UHF antenna with mast head amplifier. Google for the nearest/best transponder in line of sight.

Nearby buildings can reflect signals causing issues. If you can see a transponder point the antenna straight at it but you have to match it's transmission type - i.e. vertical or horizontal orientation.

Ended up going with Antennaplus. Did a great job. Installed the new antenna and fixed up problems caused by other antenna guys over the years.

      Thanks. What did it cost?

    • Did he put it back on the chimney?
