Freon Gas Leak

Hey all

Got a small AC unit in my bedroom that has developed a gas leak. The real estate agent is fixing it but needs to wait for parts. Should I be sleeping elsewhere? Or just leave window open at night? My only other options are in the living room or a hotel.

  • "Freon is certainly a health hazard. Freon is a lethal toxic substance, and for this reason, Freon leaks should be handled by an expert air conditioning repair technician. Inhaling Freon is highly poisonous and could result in death. In addition, Freon leaks deplete the ozone layer and are unsafe for the environment."

It all depends on how much you value your life.

How do you know it has a gas leak? Did the person who diagnosed the leak tell you how much gas of left in the unit?

What kind of AC is it? If it's a split system, then the leak is most likely outside of the house. Those leak all the time, without people realizing it. Even if it's one of those old school window box ACs, the leak would mostly be outside of the house.

Definitely something to worry about if it's an internal portable AC…

    • The AC guy says a leak on the split system ac internal unit, when he was there, could detect it but couldnt find it. In the last half hour, I can hear a hiss coming from the aircon

Didnt say how much gas was left

      • If you can hear a hiss then it'll most likely discharge itself soon enough (I would open doors & windows to ventilate the place in the meantime).

It would have been preferable for the so-called 'tech' to have safely removed the gas from the system, whilst he was ordering parts. It can always be recharged afterwards.

But that would mean he can't charge you for more gas after he fixes the leak…

    So much crap posted above.

R-410A is used in air conditioners it's safe, non-toxic, non-flammable. R12 and R22 that could be toxic in LARGE doses such as idiots sniffing it haven't been in use for over 20 years.

    • Came here to say the same thing and knew there would be others posting rubbish.

    • There's still the risk of suffocation, if the gas fills the room, but yeah you'd need the right conditions…

    • He may have an older unit. Older airconditoners and other equipment that are already in service can be refilled/serviced until 2030 using new R22 ( Freon ) after that they can still be filled with reclaimed r22.

  • I think you'll be fine, you may gain some mild superpowers.
