Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium - Full version

Windows or Mac, link above is for Windows version. Those of you in Starbucks on a Macbook can look it up yourselves (actually, look outside, I think someone is stealing your single-speed).

$850US which is half the RRP according to the B&H site and super cheap according to me. Full versions of all the programs listed below. Cheaper than just Photoshop CS5 Extended alone so it is a great deal.

They do ship to Australia and it is $36.46US for just this item for 4-6 day shipping.

I ordered Lightroom from them earlier this year when they had it for $170US or something. Although the box says 'only for distribution in North America', registration was fine, updates install as normal. All good.

I am not going to search for all the best prices in staticice, too hard with the different versions (education, upgrades from various things etc and with the normal poor usability of that site) or on eBay (because if you are considering dropping this much cash on software on eBay then you are on your own).

I copied and pasted this for your perusal:

Product Highlights

Premiere Pro CS5.5
After Effects CS5.5
Photoshop CS5 Extended
Audition CS5.5
Flash Catalyst CS5.5
Flash Professional CS5.5
Illustrator CS5.5
Media Encoder & Device Central CS5.5
OnLocation CS5, Encore CS5, Bridge CS5
64-Bit Compatibility

You could even add a Crucial Tech 128GB ssd for under $200 and be really ahead of the game. All your friends will think you are super-cool. Buy yourself a couple of 30 inch Dells (which an unbelievable number of OZB members claim to have) and you will be a graphic designer in no time. Not having these things is the only reason you aren't already, right?

I have just seen it appears to be the same price on Adorama if you prefer that.

The profile stalkers among you will notice that this is my first deal post.

phoar, cheap as. Only a tiny bit more than the local EDUC version.

    +1 to the starbucks+fixie comment. :D

Forgot to beg for kindness as this is your first post.

i consider that an insult, he called us a stalker!
        Here's a +

  • +5

Just a side reminder for NSW DEC teachers that they can get Master Collection CS5.5 for $85 + $12P/H delivered to their school for personal use from SI Group.
    https://www.sigroup.com.au/shop-teachers-employees.html

    • Thanks for the reminder

$97.50 is more like what I wanted to pay :)

    • AWESOME! Thanks! :D

  • Nice first deal. +1

  • Actually the '1' icon next to your name signifies that this is your first post. If people wanted to profile stalk you, much more than that would probably come up :)

  • Nice.. just a shame i'm looking for 3 copies of Design Premium :(

    • Hehe, yeah, would have bought a few copies here too if a similar discount had been extended to Design Premium. :)

    Awesome price.

You could even add a Crucial Tech 128GB ssd for under $200 and be really ahead of the game.

Just be careful about exceeding the $1000 duty/GST-free threshold for imports; adding the SSD to your order could cost you an extra ~$160 in taxes.

People have to buy it if they're actually using it for commercial purposes. otherwise, these companies generally don't mind if you use pirated software if you're just mucking around

      • +3

Nope, they have trial versions for just mucking around. Their activation procedures would seem to suggest that they really don't want people to be able to use their software for free for any great stretch of time..

+1 to the OP for the MAC reference.

        • +12

my point is, they generally will turn a blind eye to it. These companies make money selling licenses to businesses. of course they aren't going to outright encourage piracy, but recalling my days at uni, i know that the reps for Adobe and Autodesk weren't too bothered about students using pirated software at home. it was more important to them that people starting out using Adobe, so that once they learnt the software, they were more likely to stick with it throughout their career

      • +2

Except if you're using open-source software! Then it's free and you don't need to pirate it :)

        • +1

in this case, there's absolutely no open-source equivalent. Pity..

        • +4

There are open source, free or much cheaper equivalents to many of these packages. Here are just a few starting points that cover almost everything in the Adobe Creative Suite…

          Photoshop - GIMP, Paint.Net etc - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-photoshop/
Illustrator - Inkscape, Corel Draw, Xara etc - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-illustrator/
          Premiere Pro - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-premiere-pro/
          After Effects - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-after-effects/
          Audition - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-audition/
          Flash Professional - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-flash/
          Media Encoder - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-media-encoder/
Device Central - See flash above, and also projects like Illumination Software Creator at http://radicalbreeze.com/ and other alternatives - see http://lunduke.com/?p=1744
          OnLocation
          Encore - http://alternativeto.net/software/avs-dvd-authoring/
          Bridge - http://alternativeto.net/software/adobe-bridge/ and http://alternativeto.net/software/xnview/

        • Most of these products have no real open source equivalents unfortunately.

        • @bretprew - did you even read my post? Heaps of open source stuff in the links.

        • +2

rygle - if you actually use creative suite for serious work, absolutely none of those open source alternatives are actually usable. For mucking around perhaps, but for actual work, definitely not. Did you even read the alternatives you posted? Virtualdub or avidemux as an alternative to Premiere?? :)

        • I said no 'real' alternatives. @eug is right, suggesting virtualdub as a substitute for premiere is a joke. I agree, Virtualdub is very useful and may be enough for a lot of people and I am all for open source or cheaper programs, but there is no contest in this case.

I wasn't calling you out, if you are happy with those programs for your needs then great.

I suggest people try out the Adobe trials and some of the options you suggest and see what works for them. If they can get what they need for free or cheap then great.

Also, B&H normally have the Photoshop and Premiere Elements package for around $120 which would be more power than most people need.

        • +1

I don't know if you noticed this in the list of Open Source software - http://alternativeto.net/software/lightworks/about

          Read the overview of that package;
"Lightworks is an editing powerhouse, delivering unparalleled speed and flexibility, fully integrated with the other members of the Complete Collaboration family.

Lightworks is an Academy and Emmy award-winning professional-grade video editor with over 20 years of history in the film and broadcast industry. Having cut hundreds of films such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Centurion and Shutter Island, it includes a full feature set of editorial tools — from advanced trimming and media management, to stereoscopic support and real time effects including multiple secondary color correctors."

That's a pretty good wrap for a free program. And there are some other top-notch open source or free programs in those other links. Inkscape is a pretty darn good vector graphics editor, GIMP and others match many features of photoshop. And they do it for $0.

I know the Adobe stuff is good, and that not all of it has good alternatives. No arguments there. All I was trying to show is that saying "there's absolutely no open-source equivalent" isn't the whole story.

        • Yup most video editors/enthusiasts know (or should know) about Lightworks, which only became opensource recently.

Some people think they had to do it to avoid it dying out completely…

The overview is correct - it has 20 years of history. Unfortunately that's also its downfall - with today's editors, it's sorta like sticking with Lotus 1-2-3 instead of moving to Excel. It is also only one part of the whole editing workflow.

          http://www.mikejones.tv/journal/2011/1/17/lightworks-editing…

None of those opensource programs have the equivalent of Adobe Dynamic Link, which is a very important feature for efficient workflow between Creative Suite apps. Adobe's CS also uses GPU acceleration which is very important when working with H.264 video. No need to waste time with proxy clips or timeline rendering.

I'll say it again - there is absolutely no open-source equivalent for Creative Suite. You need to remember that Creative Suite isn't a bunch of independent programs, they all work together.

There's a bunch of independent, unlinked opensource programs that cover the basics (is there an opensource primatte-quality keyer? anything from the trapcode plugin suite? cameratracker?), but they don't even come close to Creative Suite's features, performance, integration, ease-of-use (no fiddling around with perpetual beta copies just to use a new feature - it just works), and reliability.

As you can tell from the price, Creative Suite is aimed at professionals and serious enthusiasts. For them, there is absolutely no opensource equivalent. People who actually need the features offered by CS will agree. Those who play with CS just-for-fun to make simple videos could possibly be satisfied with opensource equivalents, but that's not the CS target market.

Saying there is an opensource equivalent to Creative Suite is similar to people who try out MS Office to type a basic letter, then say that Wordpad is a perfectly functional alternative to MS Office, since it can produce a basic letter too.

        • @eug - you might want to read Mike Jones' own comments on that post about how much he likes Lightworks, and how his misgivings were largely based on a previous version…

        • I did, but the first part still holds true. And the fact that in reality, "nobody cares".

Symbian was amazing in its day. It was a very capable system. Then better UIs came out. Symbian went downhill. It was made available opensource, but too little too late. The train has left the station.

Now, as capable as Symbian is with its new ^iterations and improved UI, nobody cares about it anymore even though it's free and opensource - apart from a shrinking community of loyal users perhaps.

Opensource software is great, but it's not always a viable alternative to every commercial suite of applications out there, much less standalone applications. There are many commercial suites that simply do not have a viable opensource alternative - this being one of them.

I take it you're not really a CS user. If you did actually use it "properly", you'll agree with me in a snap.

        • You have totally missed my point, but nobody cares, least of all me. Whatever…

        • +1

          Okay guys, move on.

If you don't want it, don't buy it. Fight the power.

If you want it, buy it. Rejoice in the savings.

        • -1

Just like how there are apple and android fanatics, there are also opensource fanatics. They both give their respective subjects a bad name. Pity.

    • Funny, I see a lot of negs but no explicit mention of software piracy???

I often tend to forget too, my employer has a very good licencing arrangement with MS & a couple of others, so none of us have to pay for OS's or certain productivity software as required for home use! :)

  • +2

I also lol'd hard at the Mac reference, despite owning one myself >:D

    • +3

Thumbs up to that. The fact you can laugh at a good joke means that you own the Mac, Apple doesn't own you! ;)

I love the skivvy-set at cafes, they definitely fly in on the ROFLcopter! Most people just ask for the wifi passkey, with them it's almost like the old Homer Simpson gag 'You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel'! I've literally heard them ask for it & say very loudly "I'm using a Mac in case that makes any difference"…the look on the staff members face always shows that they've mastered the telepathic facepalm! :p

      • +1

You got negged for suggesting Apple doesn't own me, lulz :D

      • +1

yeah, these kids should know better. telling them that you are trying to connect using OS/2 Warp will actually get them hot under the collar

        • There's a little uber-nerdy chick at my local GJ's that I suspect would actually get hot if I started talking nasty old OS's like OS/2 with her! ;)

  • Awesome, thanks.

This is even cheaper than using the SWITCH promotion. http://www.adobe.com/au/special/offers.html

  • Great price. Shame I'm also looking at the design premium.

Does anyone know if updating an Australian version of CS with a US bought upgrade pack actually works. Never found a definitive answer to this.

  • These 30 inch dells are desktop workstations right? Can you tell me what model they are please?

  • +1 for the Hipster dig
