Yesss “Lao Gan Ma” this is the best!!!
Contains MSG
MSG is fine, or you be never going to a chinese restaurant ever again.
@boomramada: Or eat cheese, grapes, tomatoes or mushrooms.
@jv: When blind tested with foods naturally containing MSG (as indicated by roguescholar above), most people "allergic" to MSG don't actually report symptoms. This means MSG allergy - like gluten intolerance - is largely psychosomatic for most people.
You probably eat MSG without even knowing it…check the ingredient list on heaps of stuff:
Flavour Enhancers 620 thru 637 are all forms of MSG as far as I know.
@jv: yes.. you would if you're allergic to it.. most people probably have some form of intolerance at least and don't realise it
@jimdotpud: You can't be allergic to it. It is literally essential to the functioning of your body and brain. What may happen is that very large doses of MSG in some people can cross the blood brain barrier, leading to an increase in it's normal excitatory actions. So you're not "allergic" per se, your just transporting more glutamate into your brain.
@jimdotpud: Or you know, when your body chops up any protein containing glutamic acid - a naturally occurring amino acid found in virtually every (probably all) proteins. MSG is just the sodium salt of this amino acid.
Glutamate (the zwitterionic form of glutamic acid) is an important neurtransmitter and key element of normal metabolism. Your body is full of it and cannot function without it.
Your body is full of it and cannot function without it.
That might explain my lack of energy this morning.
@lunchbox99: i still think that there is a vast difference between the way your gut processes natural foods (and breaks it down as you state) and the way it handles already processed forms and/or laced with additives(also likely to be highly concentrated)
@jimdotpud: Yes it's true the rate of absorption is going to be higher for pure MSG. But the effects people experience are largely due to glutamate "leaking" across the BBB into the brain. I haven't investigated any specific studies but maybe people who are "allergic" to MSG have a different transporter protein(s) or more leaky tight junctions of endothelial cells - all explaining why more glutamate crosses into the brain in some people.
There are heeeaaaps of different flavours within this brand though. Personal fave is the fried soy bean one.
Make it yourself, there are alot of howto videos on youtube. Its actually quite easy.
xianglawang is good stuff
Koon Yick Wah Kee taste very good, made in hong kong. Most Canton Yum Cha Dim Sum restaurant use them.

Asking for a friend…
What exactly is in that orange goodness that is chili oil?
Bought a tub of shop-made stuff at a random Vietnamese restaurant. So good.
Maybe check your local pho places and see if they sell it.
wuhan
Coles sells Laoganma or La yu chilli oil in the International Foods aisle.
Look up Szechuan chilli oil recipe. It's pretty easy to make and fresh chilli oil and tastes great. Keeps in the fridge for about a month so you can dumpling the sh*t out of yourself for a whole month.
Partner makes his own. Saves jars from other things(pasta sauce), washes them well, grows various chili's and herbs he likes then buys olive oil. Mixes it all together in one of the recycled jars and lets it sit in cupboard till he wants to use it. Easy peasy!!!
