Computer Display Issue

Hi

I received a desktop pc from my brother in law's place of work.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to use my normal blue cable display cable to kick start the pc.
Wondering what's i am doing wrong. So far I have only used the blue cable to connect to the monitor and I get the following error https://imgur.com/a/JYFQX0z

The back and model number of the desktop is:

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you

The error says exactly what it is. Don't use the blue VGA cable. You have better graphic card installed so use that instead. You will need either HDMI or dvi cable.

  • As above said you will need to use the div or pull the video card out. If a video card is installed the picture always outputs from it by standard.

Or HDMI if your monitor/tv allows

  • DVI is the white output on the back of the pc. Not all monitors have DVI input. If you have an older monitor you may need to upgrade, or get a VGA to DVI adapter from ebay. Alternatively test it on your tv with hdmi cable.

The Yellow circle is a displayport. and the green circle is called a DVI port. You can use either of those 2 cables to connect to the computer. If you already have a VGA cable (This is what the blue cable is called) You can use one of these https://imgur.com/MeKOhZl (DVI to VGA adaptor) to connect the VGA cable to the computer in the DVI port.

However the Displayport cable or a DVI cable will give you better quality picture but it depends on whether or not you monitor has the correct ports.

There is a problem with either the cable or monitor port or the PC setup
I had a monitor with only the white DVI ports and used a DVI to VGA converter as my computers only had the blue VGA port.
Some would would fine. Others gave this message.

It was because the monitor is asking for a DVI signal.

I could not resolve why some worked properly with the DVI to VGA adapter whilst others gave this message

Check the monitor is set up for VGA (blue) display.
Usually they auto switch but maybe not yours.
Try a different cable and a different monitor.

    Otherwise look on facebook Marketplace
Plenty going free or for $10-$20

Face Palm……. The error tells you want it wrong and what to do.

Anyhow if you want to use the VGA port/cable, open the case up and remove the silver card. Close the case. Try again.

    • Agree. It couldn't be any clearer.

Yeah I’m sure the guy calling a vga the ‘blue cable’ understands what an integrated video connector is…

      • The error message pretty much gives you a step by step guide on how to fix it. If you can't follow that, then maybe the internet isn't the place for you.

        • Instructions which are nonsense and jargon for the average user who doesn’t event understand the concept of dedicated vs integrated graphics processors.

  • As above. Looks like the pc has been set to PCIe video card (DVI/DP). Not on board VGA. This is usually set in bios. There is normally a jumper that can be set on the motherboard to reset the bios back to default. How to do this can be found in the user manual.

Can't help with that since the 2nd photo just shows the model of the 255watt power supply. Not the actual model of the DELL PC. Which you haven't supplied.

    • Lol the bios is auto updated to video card output by default… resetting bios will do the same thing. Gota manual set output (far to complex for this op) or remove the card or use the HDMI or dvi

  • VGA is analogue DVI is digital you can get DVI to HDMI converters which are compatible, you can’t do VGA to DVI unless the adapter has a converting chip inside of it.

  • Thank you to all your encouraging feedback.
I didn't know what to do but it worked when I took the graphics card out as suggested.

Will League of Legends work with no graphics card? - It is a Intel® Core™ i5-4570 and according to this website, it has Intel® HD Graphics 4600 onboard. It should be sufficient for games like league of legends?

Also any experience or recommended wifi receiver?

    Thank you :)

    • I've never played League of Legends but I had a look at the system requirements and the onboard graphics should work fine. However, the graphics card you removed should* make the game run better (*depending on what model the graphics card actually is)

As to a wifi receiver, pretty much any USB 3.0 should work fine. Just make sure to connect it to a USB 3.0 port. (one of the USB ports that say SS above it)

    • League of Legends will run on Intel graphics but it's very likely whatever card you had installed will probably run it much better.

Your TV or your monitor should be connected to the video card — you encountered the error because the cables were plugged into the wrong socket, though you might need a HDMI -> DVI cable https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/xcd-essentials-hdmi-to-dv…

  • Hi

Another update, I replaced the cleaned up the CPU and cooler, reapplied new thermal seal, changed 3.5" to 2.5" 1tb HDD (didn't have a spare ssd :/ ), got a DVI to VGA convertor for $2 at MSY.

Now I'm stuck on USB wifi. The one recommend by the MSY bloke was https://www.msy.com.au/tp-link-archer-t2uh-ac600-high-gain-w…

I don't know much about USB wifi but the desktop box will be bit far from the modem.

Any recommendations on USB wifi devices?
