HELP NEEDED - Media Player under $100 for X265 Mkv Files

Hi,
I'm after cheap and capable Media Player under $100

I don't need streaming facilities, it will not be connected to internet.
I DO need ability to play x265, x264, dts, mkv, hd audio files, up to 4K output.
USB port to play files from (usb hdd or thumb drive)
HDMI full size port (preferable)
Remote control

Any recommendations?

Thank you!!

Will you be playing your collection of extended wedding videos or linux iso's?

Probably garbage at that price point but meets your criteria: https://www.amazon.com.au/Android-Edal-X96mini-Amlogic-Suppo…

    • probably right you are

    • Hi, is there a recommendation for something 3D or VR?

I want something more high resolution when I’m viewing in the bathroom

    Vodafone tv - $72, 4K, etc etc

    • That was one option I was looking at.
However couldn't find anywhere a list of file types it played from USB port. All "in depth" reviews talk only about streaming capabilities and no body covered what can be done thru USB port. Can it play from USB HDD or just thumb drive, what file types, etc.

If anyone here, who has Vodafone TV can provide more info, would be great! Cheers!

I asked Vodafone customer service directly about this and they said the Vodafone TV would not be able to play media files from External HDDs

Works fine (including H265) if you install a player – such as MX Player or VLC. I've tried mine with a 32G USB stick, and a 1TB HDD.

Someone earlier in the thread suggesting using plex etc to stream from a main source. That's what I do now, makes life a lot easier so you're not moving the drive around

      • X265 works fine on the vtv

I got a Vodafone TV for my Mum. I installed VLC to play media files through the USB port. I only had one x265 MKV file to test (as my own media player doesn't support them), but it played fine.

Vodafone TV is an absolute beast.

Install Kodi from the app store and you're good to go.

I throw massive 1080p h264 and 265 home movies at it all the time with no problems!

Edit: I don't play these files from usb though, so can't speak to that. I stream them over the network from my server.

  • hmm.. anyone can think of a solution for me to play x265 documentaries from my Synology NAS on my TV (but the NAS is self is old and doesnt support x265)? probably impossible, right?

      Install Plex on the NAS

      • i have that. but as i said, the NAS processor is old and already checked on Synology website, my NAS is not able to play x265.
or you saying plex can handle regardless what the machine is?

hmm a while ago i tried and couldnt play x265 on my tv

        • Plex should be able to decode afaik

What's the model number of your NAS?

          • @spackbace: DS1511+
it has Intel Atom D525 Dual Core 1.8GHz, with floating point. found lots on google, not able.

            • @CyberMurning: Hmm ok the Googles tells me it can't transcode, so the device it streams to needs to know what it's looking at in order to play it. Only way would be to run a media player (like the Vodafone TV) for your TV

Or use it as a reason to upgrade the old NAS ;)

              • @spackbace: ok so i need to copy/put the x265 files on separate portable HDD and plug it to the vodafone tv connected to my tv, right?… hmmm not good, i want all my files in one place.
reason for x265 because its size… now i have all medias in x264.

nah, too expensive to upgrade Synology NAS. could be doing DYI NAS one day maybe in another few years. i remember 3-4 years ago one brand/model of pc was very famous in ozb to become a NAS. forgot what… HP? literally every week i see a deal on that.

current NAS still working fine, except no x265 and still usb 2.0 ports hahaha

                • @CyberMurning:

ok so i need to copy/put the x265 files on separate portable HDD and plug it to the vodafone tv connected to my tv, right?

No, you can still stream directly to the VTV. The Vodafone TV will then play the file directly to the TV. The issue is that the NAS can't convert (transcode) the file so your TV can see it (NAS doesn't have the processing power). VTV will allow you to play it directly.

                  • @spackbace: oh? so the VTV is just like chromecast? then first i need to access/play the x265 (the files are on my NAS) on my laptop for example (my new laptop has GTX 1050ti) and then i somehow cast it to VTV which connected to my TV?

                    • @CyberMurning:

then first i need play the x265 (files are on my NAS) on my laptop

No, you just load up the Vodafone TV, open the Plex app, select your media and play it. No need for the laptop to cast or anything

                      • @spackbace: woah thanks ok let me google/youtube how this little genius works in action.
and so i can re-download all my cough linux distros cough in x265!

                        • @CyberMurning: If you wanted. Personally I download the hi-res ones (8-10GB or so) wherever possible.

I believe Plex needs Kodi to run on the Vodafone TV, but can be loaded. Read up on the VTV forums on here

  • Got VTV, downloaded VLC, it plays x265 10bit, DTS, pretty much all files no issues. I don't have 4K TV so can't comment on 4K performance.
Play through USB from 2.5" HDD as well as USB thumb drive.
    Thanks everyone!

    • Yay :) good to hear it works for you

    • How did you get it so quick? And how much?
