Xiaomi Buying Advice

Hello, am looking at buying the Xiaomi a3 as a cheap phone with all the features I need. I am a bit nervous about buying from a store like tobydeals due to no Australian warranty. Could anyone with experience give any advice on if they would pay the premium to buy it off an Australian site like dick Smith for a premium instead? I’ve also heard rumours about in built ads on these phones not sure if that applys to Australian stock. Thanks in advance

Purchased a mi a3 for a friend from tobydeals (at that time they had the best deal including wallet case and tempered screen protector and fairly fast shipping), easy process paid via paypal order arrived within 4 days from ordering via Toll tracker courier. Genuine phone sealed box. No complaints :)

    • How much extra did you pay for shipping? Usually takes 3-4 weeks from China.

      • Worth paying the extra shipping insurance?

        • Honestly i don't think you need to. I got two Mi 9T Pros (one for me and one ordered on behalf of my cousin) and they both came quickly and safely. Pretty reliable honestly, but know that they are grey imports and it's probably only for the ones that are popular and sell well.

Paid $266 back in September 2019. Included shipping, wallet case & tempered glass screen protector. 4GB RAM/128GB ROM variant mi a3.

    • Assume you’re happy with it?

      • Got it for a friend, yes very happy with it

  • You do realise that Dick Smith A3 literally says across the top of the listing “Direct Import“???

an Australian site like dick Smith

Dick Smith is owned by Ruslan Kogan = Grey imports.

    • I knew that but just assumed being an Australian site they have to honour Australian consumer law? Would make it easier if there’s any issues

No. Lots of people have had issues with this. Almost anyone can get a .au domain, doesn't mean anything.

        • Alright thanks for the advice. Will just order off tobydeals

  • Will just order off tobydeals

Grey imports also, based in Hong Kong last time I looked.

Officeworks claimed at one stage that they will price match the larger Grey importers.

Might be worth looking into to see if it's true and they still do it?

  • Yes, there is in built ads on MIUI but the miA3 is an android one phone, it doesn't use MIUI. I don't think it will have in built ads but cannot confirm it.
Shouldn't have as it is supposed to be stock android

I bought a Xiaomi mi 9t pro (Global version) off Toby Deals recently.

No issues with Toby deals. Shipped very fast, but tracking wasn't very accurate.

Some of the built in apps have ads (who puts ads in the damn file explorer!?). My solution- I don't use those built in apps. The phone has an option to hide apps, so I hide them all. No ads in the general user interface.

Great phone though. I am a big fan. Would 100% but again.

Use poco launcher if you get one.

      • I think I made the mistake of ordering during Chinese New Year. Heard that most people won’t be back at work till the 9th

  • If you need to buy, you should try and buy quickly and not think too much about it.

Xiaomi recently moved their R&D headquarters to Wuhan. I'm not sure how much production was earmarked for this area but apparently there are no workers on site.

I think the same advice applies to other brands as well. Try buy a phone soon before prices start rising. Some suppliers are starting to mention shortage of phone screens.

  • When is A4 out?
