Is It Safe to Clamp a Monitor Arm on a IKEA Linnmon Desk?

So I currently have a 32 inch monitor to which I'd like to attach to a monitor arm to give me more flexibility when using it. I currently have a IKEA Linnmon tabletop which is supported by an Alex Drawer and Adil legs with an additional one in the middle.

However I've heard that the Linnmon cracks or bends under the clamping pressure of a monitor arm and I'd be keen to hear people's experiences with doing so.

  • Pretty soft wood (paper really)
i wouldn't … but maybe ask Ikea and see what they say

    • Also will depend on the clamp itself and how much surface area (of the mechanism) the load is distributed over.

      • +1

I've heard that simply putting a wooden block in between the clamp and the table helps a lot, but would it be enough?

        • +2

That would help to distribute that load, so I can definitely see it helping. The bigger the piece (s) of wood the better - you'd want one on either side of the clamp/table.

          • @HighAndDry: Could I just place any piece of wood? Or are there types of wood to avoid?

            • @Eccend: The harder and more dense the wood the better. Not really anything to avoid, but would be little point in using thin pieces of particle board, for example, just because you'd have the exact same problem as with the table in the first place.

        • I think that would help a lot but these are really cheap desks. Depending on size the wood might cost as much as the table top if you buy from Bunnings etc. If you don't move the monitor around much I might be tempted to just try it and watch for any cracking etc.

  • I have one with a dual monitor arm …. its been bent in the middle for about 3 years now… hasn't cracked yet

  • You can but don't clamp too hard. The Linnmon is made of paper fill

  • Was fine with my dual monitor arm setup

  • I am about to do that for my LG 34" on my IKEA Linnmon Desk, I will put a piece of wood at the bottom of the desk only.

Do you guys think should be enough? BTW I put the arm on the right hand side not in the middle.

    • I've currently done it with a 32" monitor on the left side with one block of wood on the top and bottom. It's been 3 months since I've put it on and it does look okay, but I do think that's thanks to the 2 blocks of wood.

  • Used the ergotron LX mount for an LG38WN95C on my linnmon ikea desk. Noticed on the second day that the desk bends under pressure, and decided to revert back to the original monitor stand. Wouldn't risk it and probably will invest in a more sturdy desk given how much the monitor costs.
