Nutella Hazelnut Chocolate Spread 750g $5.50 (Was $8.75) @ Coles

290

750g Nutella Hazelnut Chocolate Spread $5.50 at Coles ($0.73 per 100g).

Was $8.75 save $3.25.

The cheapest I've seen it was at $5.00, but I think at $5.50 it's still a good deal (especially if you love Nutella like me).

Nutella is described as a chocolate and hazelnut spread, although it is mostly made of sugar and palm oil wikipedia

A product should be called for what it is: a plastic jar filled with sugar, palm oil and flavoured with hazelnuts, cocoa and vanillin

Current list of ingredients: Sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts (13%), skim milk powder (8.7%), cocoa powder (7.4%), non-fat milk solids, emulsifier (soy lecithin), flavour (vanillin).
Compare with original: The traditional Piedmont recipe, gianduja, was a mixture containing approximately 71.5 % hazelnut paste and 19.5 % chocolate.

No wonder that Under Italian law, it cannot be labeled as a "chocolate cream", as it does not meet minimum cocoa solids concentration criteria.

Did you notice that it became lighter in colour in recent years? Well, that's because In 2017, the recipe was modified (once again), increasing the sugar and skimmed milk powder content.

    So much for "chocolate spread".

      1. Are you saying that we should start calling Coca Cola "water sugar" ?
      2. Original Gianduja is not Nutella. Originally, Gianduja was a solid block, so you cannot call that "chocolate cream" either. Even Supercrema Gianduja is not Nutella.
      3. Not all Nutella jars are made of plastic
        :)
      • You don't think "a plastic jar filled with sugar, palm oil and flavoured with hazelnuts, cocoa and vanillin" just rolls off the tongue?

this is really interesting, i had no idea what a rort nutella is. not that something with a higher % chocolate would be any healthier but is there a chocolate spread anyone recommends instead?

Just buy the Coles brand equivalent one which has the same 13% of hazelnuts and palm oil … For cheaper.
Personally, I now buy the Coles brand premium one with 30% hazelnuts and NO palm oil. Bit more expensive but more tasty. And NO palm oil. Made in Italy too

    • Coles brand equivalent: INGREDIENTS LIST: Sugar, Vegetable Oil (Palm Oil**), Hazelnut (13%), Low Fat Cocoa Powder (7%), Skimmed Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Lactose, Vegetable Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin), Natural Vanilla Flavour

Yeah, that's the equivalent. This is the premium one. Hazelnuts (30%), sunflower oil, cocoa butter, low fat cocoa powder (7%), skimmed milk powder,…

        • I got that the other day. It's quite nice and made in Italy.

        • The problem is that they don’t taste like Nutella :)
