Myer No Longer Puts Price Tags on Electrical Products

Was at Myer yesterday in Parramatta.. saw they had 30% off Kitchenaid products, including accessories. Had a look to see if there was anything worthwhile, but to my amazement, nothing had a sticker with a a price on it anywhere. Some products had a little sign saying the price, most didn’t.

Went to the register to ask, apparently this is the new policy of Myer, to stop price matching. Ladies at the registers were getting sick of scanning heavy boxes for customers, only for them to say “no thanks, too much”.

Anyone else noticed this elsewhere? Myer staff said this was going on at JB as well, though haven’t noticed it (yet?).

I walked out of Myer without getting any pricing, I’ll get my stuff elsewhere.

I know i was in the UK recently i was in a store very similar to JB, nothing had a price on it
The store had an app, you downloaded it and you could scan the product you wanted and it would show you the price on your app.
This apparently allowed them to update pricing in real time to "always be the best price"
I am not saying this is what Myer/JB are doing but it seemed like a relevant place to share :P

I would be happy with this option but a fair number of customers wouldn’t be. If that is there issue they should have electronic tags or a set of scanners near the products. Target has scanners you can check the price of goods with.

    Interesting.

I had noticed the missing price tags, but did not know it was an actual company policy. Had assumed it was just lack of care by the staff.

The new policy will just drive down sales by a lot. It's really hard to catch a staff member to do the scanning, and why would I queue for a long time just to find out how much it costs.

    • +6

Couldn’t agree more. And staff hated it as well, the ladies I spoke to yesterday stated that they cop the abuse from people cause queue length for the registers grows.

  • +30

So they are introducing another purchase hurdle? They want to make it harder for a customer to give them money?

    • +6

Myers already going down the gurgler, glad they recognise this and are speeding the process

    • Sure, but then compare model numbers etc, to make sure you have the right one… it’s an inconvenience.

    • A lot of shopping centres still have terrible cell network. I know, it's 2020! But it still exists

      • Not sure when the last time you went to Kmart/Target/Big W is, but they all have product scanners in store so that you can check the price.

As for why not just go on Myer online to check the price, not everything sold in store in Myer is sold online

They also have GASP price tags on the shelf, just like myer has around as well.

The op was complaining about joining to queue to do a price check as they couldn't find the ticket displaying the price. The idea to check the website for a price is a pretty simple one, but looking at the feedback from most people on this site, it appears most need to be spoon feed the price.

          • @JimmyF: No, the op (me) was asking people’s opinion about this tactic to avoid price matching.

Sorry if it read like a complaint about joining a queue. When I was there, there was no queue. The complaint was from the cashier, about this policy.

              @Lord Fart Bucket:

No, the op (me) was asking people’s opinion about this tactic to avoid price matching.

Thanks for replying, but not sure why you would think removing the price sticker would avoid price matching. People who are in the mindset to 'price match' a item, will research the price before hand or instore, knowing very well that myer isn't going to be the cheapest (most of the time).

      • I think you got downvoted as your comment added little to no value to the discussion.

        • added little to no value to the discussion.

It added a way for you to check the price without having to queue up or ask someone.

Not my fault this place is full of lazy whingers who can't see that. Its funny, such a outcry for myer removing price tags that I'm sure they don't even shop at. I really wonder how they shop at just about every other store in the world doesn't put a price tag on each item.

Anyhow, I really don't care what they think.

          • @JimmyF:

I really wonder how they shop at just about every other store in the world doesn't put a price tag on each item. No advertising the price without them scanning it, or looking online.

They put it on the shelf under the item. OP is saying that Myer have removed that completely. Not on the item, or on the shelf.

The fact you keep referencing pricing on shelves makes me think you missed the point completely. Hence why everyone just reads your comments and thinks you're an idiot who just wants to argue.

The only way for a customer to know the price of the electrical item at Myer appears to be just take it up to the person at the till, hence why they're getting sick of people going "too expensive" and walking out.

Older people won't check the site to know pricing, and personally I wouldn't bother checking once I saw a sales tactic like that.

            Got it now?

            • -1

              @spackbace:

that Myer have removed that completely

              completely? Yet the op says

Some products had a little sign saying the price

Have you been to Myer to check what they have or just jumping on the bandwagon to beat up on someone.

MY MYER doesn't have price tags on each item, but all items have little signs cleared priced on the shelf. Just like most other places that sell electrical goods.

The OP said they have price tags around, they just couldn't find them on everything they had been looking at. So either go ask the staff behind the counter like a normal person to price check it or look up the price yourself on the website. Not that hard and please, don't give me that old person speech, anyone without a phone/mobile service/data/flat battery/has a dumb phone or just too stupid to use a phone, they can ask the staff like anyone else can.

once I saw a sales tactic like that.

Again have you checked for yourself or just got your pitch fork out?

              • +1

@JimmyF: Not a pitchfork. Neither you or I have sufficient evidence to claim that OP's Myer store doesn't have every item labelled. Hence the whole point of this post, hence everyone's replies.

Instead you went off on a tangent, quoting every other stores signage, just to argue with people. How do you know that OP's story is incorrect, that a percentage of items aren't labelled whatsoever?

Don't give a shit what your Myer has, this conversation is around what OP found at one store, and how the staff are sick of people bringing items up to check because they clearly aren't labelled.

    • And if you don't have a smart phone?

And if you do, but you don't have data?

And if you have both, but the signal is shit?

      etc, etc etc…..

      • -1

And if you don't have a smart phone?
And if you do, but you don't have data?
And if you have both, but the signal is shit?

OMG how to do shop in kmart/target/bigw/costco/bunnings/coles/woolies/iga/aldi then? You life must be a living hell.

Oh thats right, you look at the price tag on the shelf, just like everyone else.

        • Apologies - I was querying an inane suggestion about Myer and using smartphones.

What are you talking about now?

        • Oh thats right, you look at the price tag on the shelf, just like everyone else.

Which is no longer available for most products at MYER electrical department.
I’m not sure what your point is in most of this thread.

Ladies at the registers were getting sick of scanning heavy boxes for customers, only for them to say “no thanks, too much”.

Yes… Removing prices should definitely fix that

    • +7

Op is referring to that happening since the change…

  • -1

    bugger off lol such stores

  • +7

No price, no buy. How stupid.

  • +4

Did they actually bother to do a customer survey before implementing this policy?

    • +15

Myer would need a customer base to survey…

    • +1

Well, Myer's average customer wouldn't check their email very often ;) Maybe snail mail?

  • Myer has been guilty of not having pricing on all items for a long time, not just electrical. Strange some things do, some things dont

    • -3

step back, and look at other stores. kmart doesn't have price tags on most of its items, same for bigw, target, bunnings, coles, woolies and just about most places.

      • +6

        Jimmyf?
What store location did you see that….nearly everything at those stores have prices on them….

      • That's true, but the prices are on the shelves. I don't know if Myer haven't even got that now, but when I was in Myer at beginning of the month, they still had price tickets.

      • This is true, however kmart and similar have pricing on shelves for nearly all of their items. Myer is a bit of pot luck

  • +2

Myer is a legacy store circling the drain. I'll be amazed if it's still around in five years time as anything more than an online store like Dick Smith.

  • +2

Cool, so I'll just find out the price by asking the helpful staff…Who are nowhere to be seen…

  • +1

    Myer getting absolutely desperate now…OMG

Share price going lower and lower

  • The final verdict will be if Myer won’t put a price on products, the Sharemarket will revise the value of MYR.

    Same ending.

  • I wonder if this is so they can do perfect pricing. If everyone had to use a smart phone to get a price, it means they could give everyone their own unique price - maximising the price they sell to each person.
