How to Clean/Freshen up/Sanitise Responsibly and Effectively/Efficiently Your Wireless Headphones?

So I wear my Taotronics BH22's every day to work and sometimes even at work while I clean and yeah the sweat has not been nice to my headphones among other things let's just say they get a smelly workout probably only second to a plumber or tradie or other extremely sweaty smelly becoming job.

So yeah I have learnt to live with my sweat filled headphones but I'm pretty sure they hand a distinct smell and aroma of themselves not unlike gym clothes or really used socks so I want to know what is the best way to wash wireless headphones?

It needs to be a really simple and as environmentally friendly method as possible at I will be doing this probably as much as I do laundry so a good zero waste or environmentally responsible method as possible is best so I'm trying to avoid stuff like using wet wipes or air fresheners sanitisers although I don't know.. I was thinking maybe I could submerge them in a cleaning solution turned off of course then let them dry fully before turning them on again this way I might buy a second pair and rotate them just like clothes.

What do you guys think?

Who else abuses their headphones with sweat.

Obviously earbuds are easier maintenance but I definitely prefer over ear headphones compared to earphones and earbuds these days.

  • You can use isopropyl wipes, or wipe them with tissues after each use.

    • Trying to avoid wipes as they are terrible for not only the environment but our sewerage system.

Then don't chuck the wipes down the toilet you knob, and then you only have the environmental issue to worry about.

        • They still end up somewhere trying to get as close to zero waste as possible but still have some luxuries and not total sacrifice of everything.

Alcohol wipes are all you need. Dettol spray might be a little overboard. Did you really need to ask this?

  • Next time get waterproof ones so it'll be easy. But yeah just get a small bottle of isopropyl and use a rag, both will last you years probably.

    • Yeah my next purchase will most likely be waterproof and maybe even submersible if possible would be awesome.

I think rag and isopropyl is the best solution so far this way I can reuse the rag and not end up making a fatberg.

Back in Tokyo many years ago every month a lady from NTT (equiv of Telstra) would visit our business premises and wipe down/sterilise the telephone hand piece. Somehow can't see Telstra doing the same thing here!

    • I've had that in an office in Australia. They were old ladies, retirement age, I think they were volunteers looking for something to do.

    • wow that is pretty amazing I might use this in my line of work..

  • You can just buy isopropyl alcohol from bunnings and get some reusable microfibre cloths to use.

If you want to be real anal about the sterilisation, dilute the alcohol down to 70% with water before use if its not already 70%. Any higher % and the alcohol evaporates too quickly to disinfect properly.
