[Deal or No Deal] 2017 Kia Cerato Sport+

Hello geeks!

Top trim Kia Cerato Sport Plus 2017 Automatic - Excellent condition with logbooks - One owner
It has 40,000 kilometers on the clock and tinted windows.
Would you say it's a good price for $16000? I might move overseas in the next 1.5 years so would like to get good value back when I sell it but would really like to have Android Auto as well.

Car looks like this although its not this one - https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2017-kia-cerato-spo…

  • $17k buys a 2018 model but more kms.

Is a Sport+ really worth the extra over the base model?. Will buyers seek out the Sport+ in 18 months?

    • Excellent way of thinking. I have never wanted a top trim too and I think the technology will be so much better already the sport+ wouldn't look much different to the base model. Except the leather steering and seats.

Except the leather steering and seats.

Do you want the good news or the bad news?

        • Bad :P

  • What the car looks like (style etc.), or tinted windows, is unimportant. You either like the car or you don't.

The only important item you have mentioned is the km.
Is it auto or manual? What about the other condition of the car? Any interior damage, panel or bumper dents, etc? What state are the tyres in? Is there evidence of regular servicing?

If all of that lines up, have a look at some of the online car sites; most will provide a price guide so that you can then determine if it is a deal (to you) or not.

    • Looks brand new inside and out. Not too sure about the tyres though. Automatic. Serviced on time. Dont know how much value they will hold up around mid 2021 when I want to sell it.

  • We got a base model 12,000km 2018 for $17k, has CarPlay (which was my number 1 criteria)

2017 Kia Cerato… MY18… can’t wait for that thread a few years from now.

  • It has 40,000 kilometers

Ex rental or private previous owner?

if moving overseas soon, safest bet to minimise depreciation is to get something that's already 10+ years old and under $10k. Might not be as nice, but you could sell it for pretty much the same as you paid without much hassle.

And if the current choice of model is really all about Android Auto, you can easily add that to any old car with an aftermarket headunit for a few hundred.

    • I had a look at how much it is for an aftermarket H/U for my Elantra (basically same car) was, and the cost really adds up.

H/U, dash surround, 2 wiring harnesses, harness for steering wheel controls, and install if you can't do it yourself.

      • Fair point, at a quick guess that easily land anywhere between $500 and $1000 for an android auto unit.

Funny thing is that older & cheaper cars are way easier. All my runarounds have had standard DINS and no steering controls, and would feel weird with anything better than a regular bluetooth unit. So I've left thinking that a good stereo is a simple $200 upgrade and takes about 5mins if you get the right parts and don't have to splice any cables.

Something with Android Auto is more like $500 just for the unit, plus you'd budget around $150 for harnesses and dash surrounds, plus maybe another $100 for install. So, $750 give or take? Not so cheap.

        • There are some nice Android Auto/Apple Carplay H/U on special for about $400-$500. But as an example, for my Elantra I would need;

          Pioneer AVH-Z5250BT: $486
          Iso to Pioneer harness: $20
          Fascia Kit: $115
          Steering wheel control adaptor: $90
USB adaptor (to retain factory USB plug: $50
          Antenna Adaptor: $12
          Hyundai harness: $50
          Rear camera harness: $50

          Total $873 + install.

I looked into upgrading my H/U, but ruled it out for the cost. My old VY Commodore was so much easier.

          • @AdosHouse: Yeah I was gonna say $1,000 is the ballpark

Gone are the days of the $200 HU - slot in, wire up, off you go

          • @AdosHouse: Not to disagree, but those numbers seem slightly inflated. The Hyundai harness for instance, shouldn't be over $20, same as the Pioneer one. That'd be from local ebay sellers, should be similar in the usual part stores. Cheaper from China of course, and for the basic harnesses and adapters it'd be fine (though I was always too impatient to bother for the $5 difference).

The more interesting one would be a $40 fascia shipped from China. Are they crap, or just as good?

But that'd all bring it down by a barely noticeable amount anyway, so whatevs

  • I'm not after a kia cerato sorry in advance so I'm not familiar with what's a good deal exactly but this reminded me of a story I thought to at least to share.

once (upon of time) when we were buying a used Forrester, the price was good and someone else picked it up even though we put a 'deposit' on it with a private seller.

The eventual buyer paid another 1k on top I found out some months later eventually. I know it wasn't an inside job as my darling daughter at the time went to daycare with that family and we saw that car in the carpark for a few years after that! I could never bring it to myself to say anything to the other mother but always cringed everytime I saw the car (I'm terrible).

TLDR: If it's a great deal you'll know when you hesitate for too long and someone comes and picks it up.

I thought with all the recent car related threads the guys who work for the dealers will be going along with the lines of a good price is a price that you are happy to pay that can be sold for.
