Best Authentic Cheap Eats Around Sydney?

Hi OzB!

What are your favourite cheap, authentic places to eat in Sydney? What's the best culturally authentic food that you've tried at a cheap pricepoint?

I'm looking for the hidden gems, the restaurants selling culturally authentic foods that make you feel like you're in another place in the world. Affordable places only please, any cuisine!

Thanks

yang's dumplings in burwood. Almost as good as the OG ones from Shanghai. Make sure to ask for fresh cooked ones though.

      Yang's Dumplings is awesome!

If this same post was spam this morning, seems likely it is (or will be) spammy again?

Not sure what the problem is dj kelly? Genuinely interested in starting a conversation with others to find great cheap eats around Sydney

Do Dee Paidung - for thai noodle soup, plus optional spicy levels that can blow your mind.

      This one sounds awesome, thanks!

      • make sure you go to the one opposite market city

    • I was just going to suggest this too! Super good thai food here for a really good price. Last time I had the level 1 and I died from the spice so be careful if you can't eat spicy.

    El Jannah Blacktown and Granville

    • -2

      A staple!

    • I've only had El Jannah twice and I honestly didn't rate it. Garlic sauce was too oily and left me feeling sick by the end. For a good chicken shop I would recommend Clems in Newtown or Portico in Ermington.

      • Def gotta try those two. Thanks mate!

Head to Marrickville Pork Rolls (two stores in Marrickville and one in Darling Square) for vietnamese (banh mi) bread rolls

Custard puffs at Emperors Gardens Chinatown (don't know if its authentic but its cheap, tastes nice but you often need to line up for a bit)

    • -2

I've actually never tried Marrickville pork roll, despite hearing so much about it. Do you have a favourite meat on the banh mi that you buy?

    • custard puffs, the most overated thing that gets written up all the time.

most if not all the people that line up are tourists

however, when made fresh their egg tarts with the fluffy and buttery pastry is pretty good

    • As someone from Melbourne, those custard puffs are much cheaper, fresher and tastier than anything I have found here. No idea if they’re authentic Chinese though, but they tasted quite similar to some I recently had in Korea.

Sorry but Hong Ha is better.

    • i'm a fan!

  • people rave about Student Biryani

    • It's really greasy low quality food but really tasty, perfectly cooked and reasonably priced.

  • Faheems in newtown is good, get the Nihari, tandoori chicken, and naan. Set aside a few hours to sit on the toilet after

Chatswood BBQ & Hotpot does the best crispy skin roast pork around

    • Haha! Appreciate the dish recommendations - gotta try Faheems :)

      • Good food, terrible service. Terrible.

  • Whats the beef between OP and DJkelly?

    • Not sure mate!

    • Lol, no beef at all. I was just pointing out the OP posted the exact same thread this morning which got pulled for being spam. I didn't see the thread, but assume there is a reason it happened.

      • Moderators can feel free to delete the thread if I've done anything wrong.

      • Guessing the mods are sick of brand new accounts with one post that starts with “tell us your recommended x”
Then three answers in the op posts, I myself am a fan of X, who I find the best.

        • Hahaha, maybe this was the wrong place to ask such a question

  • usually go to a particular store for a specific dish. never have I found a restaurant that I like everything they serve,

    • Do you get everything?

      • +1

no but most recommendations above are of restaurants and not specific dishes from a restaurant

        op is asking for

What's the best culturally authentic food that you've tried at a cheap pricepoint?

I interpret that as food served at the restaurant and not particularly the restaurant itself

        • Authentic restaurants and recommendations on which food to get there in particular are fine - thanks!

  • Is McDonalds an "authentic" eating place

Seriously what does OP mean by "authentic"
As per dictionary it means "real"
Are there FAKE eating places in Sydney?

  • Uruguayan club for real Uruguayan barbeque.

  • Lalor Thai is so good. Not sure how authentic it is, being Euro, but I recommend. Prices are reasonable. Can recommend soft shell crab (entree) and chilli basil fried rice with chicken mince. They're my staples when I go.

  • Gumshara Ramen in Eating World Food Court, 29 Dixon St, Haymarket NSW 2000
