  • Do click and collect people get in-store coupon at the time of picking it up?

    • I click and collect earlier today and I didn't get an in-store coupon.

      • Check your receipt, it might be printed at the bottom ?

      • "BeanCounter" can you please confirm if the coupon is not printed on the bottom like "Crusader" asked?

        • The coupon is not printed on mine. (I got a tax invoice and pick up confirmation)

          • @BeanCounter: Thanks for reply. So you did not pick up a coupon with computer, meaning you will get a gift voucher emailed to you in next 24hrs or so then?

I want to order online click and collect so not to pay delivery fee and get gift voucher instead of going in store and get coupon.

            • +1

@ozhunter68: Check JB hi-fi site quote 'Purchase this selected Chromebook and get a bonus $100 JB Coupon! Online purchasers will receive a gift card via email 2 weeks from order completion. In-store purchasers will receive a coupon at time of purchase. Offer valid from January 10 until January 31 2020.'

Ordered for delivery. Decent jump from an aging cb3-111 expiring in spring. 2nd 'book looks to receive another 6+ years support, excellent deal.

I have been playing with this chromebook for the last hour - I had an old (5.5 year old) Toshiba CB30-002. For some reason my old Toshiba CB30-002 has slightly faster startup time than HP. Multi-tabs seems to be on par for both. HP definitely has much nicer screen!

    • +2

Such price stability, chromebook for $245 in 2014, although it's a little disconcerting that the Toshiba outperforms this one!
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157627

      • +1

I have an older HP Chromebook 14 with same cpu as you had in the Toshiba CB-30-002 ( Celeron 2955U ), and I remember at that time it was one of the faster performing Chromebooks around ( this cpu had similar performance to many Pentiums at the time ).

Laptops have gone up a fair bit in the last 5-6yrs especially with the AU$ going down too, maybe 10-20% more same for same as today, so this laptop today costs $139-$239 depending on how much you value the $100 coupon/gift voucher, I would say $150-$170 is a fair estimate. So in 2020 this is actually a lot cheaper than the Toshiba, but slightly lower performance in some areas, not all though as the 4gb ram would definitely come in handy when performance is really needed such as having more than 5 Chrome Tabs open with a few videos on standby. Then the few extra seconds at start up are completely irrelevant.

I just picked mine up and I'm typing from it now.

When I was at the store I asked if I could cancel the order and then buy it now in store so I get the gift card straight away. The manager was very annoyed and said it's a lot of paperwork to do this and JB will definitely honour the gift card (as I was paranoid they wouldn't deliver the goods).

The lady at the counter told me to screenshot the web page showing the gift card offer and gave me the invoice. She said if they don't honour it, come back to into the store and they will give me a gift card.

Anyway, the laptop itself is really slick!

The screen is good quality (IPS) and it has Linux (Beta) built in.

I did a test run compiling my web apps with NodeJS and it works a treat!

Totally worth the price and has a type C charger :)

    Check it out here: https://i.imgur.com/Bo4zhIf.jpg

    • So, how do I purchase this to get the gift card instead of a voucher?

      • +3

My understanding is, if you purchase in store, they will give you the gift card.

If you do it online, they send you an e-gift card in 2 weeks (which has the same conditions as a regular gift card - it doesn't expire).

        • +5

I believe from what others have said. This is a coupon, not a gift card and it has some exclusions and expires at the end of June.

          • +7

@[Deactivated]: The customer service staff I spoke to in store confirmed it is a coupon you receive that had to be used in one transaction, with short expiry and other limitations.

    • Can you split 2 tabs so they're both visible? Can it handle video 2 streams at the same time? Say 7plus and 9now both playing live tv?

      • +2

It has window snap when you drag the windows / apps on each side of the screen.

Couldn't work out if there is a keyboard shortcut to do this.

But there is like a shortcut to show all your running windows in a grid layout (similar to Mac) and you can choose which one to focus on.

        • +3

You can press Alt+[ or ] to window snap to the left or right. Can also use the touchpad/mouse by holding on the maximise icon and dragging left or right.

  • Can anyone comment on whether the screen flickers (PWM) when dimming the screen, and what % it occurs?
e.g. waving your fingers or a pen/pencil in front of a white screen, do you notice strobing?
    Thanks.

    • +2

Haven't seen the flicker that you're talking about but I haven't dimmed the screen enough.

But, personally for $130 (if you take out the gift card) you can't go wrong.

The chassis body is really good quality, feels sturdy and solid.

      • I still haven't seen the actual unit but a similar Windows HP at JB showed PWM flicker below 90% brightness, but not at 100%.

        • +4

Ok I purchased one. Can confirm I could not see any PWM flicker at any brightness level, using the pencil test and camera set to high shutter speed.
Appears to be fanless and nicely silent.
          Screen looks good.
512GB microsd card (Samsung Evo U3) appears to work as well.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Runs MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint using Office 365 Android apps.
Unfortunately OneNote is not in the playstore for this chromebook.

  • +10

I feel myself being drawn to this though I have zero need of it - please expire the deal before I succumb.

    • I didn't need one either. had to justify to the misses why I got another laptop 😅

  • Cheers OP great find boop :)

  • Has anyone bought online received their $100 gift card yet?

    • +1

Takes 2 weeks so I doubt it, I certainly haven’t.

    • -2

      At purchase you get it

    • I got mine today, it's a regular gift card, no expiry no conditions.

  • Hard to find stock now. Does anyone know if they'll get more in-store?

  • +2

In stock, nope. Low stock, nope. Awaiting stock, yes. The force was strong in this one.

  • Is it worth to wait for a month for the stock back?

    • For many you would still say Yes, read my comment below.

For others needing a laptop ASPC probably No.

  • +1

Any idea when it will be shipped as currently says awaiting stock.

Also would the gift card be still received if the shipment is beyond 31 Jan?

    • +1

1/ For my postcode (2483 NNSW) the JB HiFi currently says: Delivery 26th Feb & Express 20th Feb.

2/From reading posts here and T & C the gift card will be emailed 14 days after online order completion,

so short simple answer is, yes you should after 2 weeks like all other orders placed online as I am assuming order completion means placing order and payment being finalized, not date order picked up. I am just using my limited retail experience though, so YMMV.

I just ordered one earlier this morning for C & C from Sunshine Coast, nice day trip drive when visiting family near North Brisbane, now nearest JB is Launceston lol, these have been flying out the door like hot cakes as great bargain. Going off US reviews they were/are selling these for around US$230-$270 with a regular HD screen ( BestBuy had it on sale for US$119 for Cyber Monday ), although bit overpriced at their regular prices. HP most likely upped the anti by then offering it with FHD screen, but we got it for around US$163 with FHD screen and bonus AU$100 gift card. Our deal is like one of those super cheap US Best Buy Wallmart deals I often read about and jealous off, here this time our turn lol.

I would not be surprised if either HP Australia or JB HiFi have made some sort of model pricing error/mix up as this almost seems too cheap for Australia and/or JB HiFi, seems more likely this price was meant for the model with a regular poorly reviewed below par HD TN screen HP at first was releasing this Chromebook with.

The good news for us is people have confirmed this model sold by JB here is FHD IPS hooray :-)

As I now love USB C PD laptop charging, this one even has that feature on both sides, as well as the micro sd card sits in flush which is both a real bonus too.

Don't forget, the Sale for 20% HP ends tomorrow 27th although the Bonus $100 Gift Card/Coupon for Chromebooks ends 31th Jan next Friday.

      • +1

Ended up buying it and it showed 30Jan delivery at checkout but paid $10 delivery fee.

        • As you are in Sydney and I'm close to Brisbane, your nearest warehouse might have stock on hand, that's why I added my Postcode and NNSW so to hint your location could be different.

Your location ended up with better result, so in your favor, so enjoy your chromebook sooner.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: I bought mine yesterday just walked into my local store, online showing no stock but when I asked in the store, they found one in stock and it was "out the back".

            • @[Deactivated]: Noice, you might have got lucky.

Is your screen matte or glossy ( see comment below )?

How do you rate the sound compared to other laptops?

              • @ozhunter68: The display is fhd but obviously not top quality. And it's not a laptop, it's basically a tablet with a keyboard.

                • +1

                  @abacus: A tablet with a keyboard? Without a touchscreen.

              • +1

@ozhunter68: The screen is matte, very little reflection.
The sound is fine, stereo speakers facing up just above the keyboard, full volume no distortion, but kind of flat range without depth or separation. Sounds better than my phone speaker.
I tested it side by side with an Asus c434, the HP speakers have similar or better volume, but the sound on the HP speakers output is more hollow and flat in comparison.

                • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the in depth reply. Looked at a few reviews, but your info sounds like a fair realistic analysis.

  • +1

A few comments are saying it's a glossy, shiny screen - to me it's as matte as you can get.

    • I have not picked mine up yet as it's over 300 Km away and the first laptop purchased

without ever seeing it first in the flesh as it's such a no brainer for me lol.

  • +1

    Thanks op, got one.

For such a cheap price, the screen, keyboard and responsiveness are all surprisingly decent.

  • +2

I saw this offer for 3 months of Disney+ for free with this Chromebook, but then discovered it won't work in Australia according to the terms:
    https://www.google.com/chromebook/disneyplus/

I had successfully redeemed the offer with my new Chromebook and obtained the redemption code, however i was then unable to activate the code in Disney+ as i'm not in the US :( Maybe ppl with a VPN would have better luck.

  • +8

To update on my day of the chromebook experience.
    TL;DR A usable $239 laptop is compelling.

    Whats good:
$239 cost. JB gives you a laptop and June expiry $100 discount coupon, making it a bit of a no-brainer.
Silent operation, no fans. I did not realise how much I appreciate this feature, until you go back to one with fans. No fan noise, no problems with dust clogging and overheating, no dust ingress covering internal components etc.
Fast boot up (compared with windows/ios)
Just closing the lid seems to put it into deep sleep with very low battery consumption, convenient.
    Headphone jack
USB C Charging port both sides
USB A port on both sides
USB C to DisplayPort works on both sides.
    microSD card expansion
FHD Matte non-touch display is relatively bright and clear, reasonable viewing angles horizontal and vertical. No low frequency PWM flicker detected at any brightness level (only basic testing though).
Upward firing "B&O" branded speakers are reasonably loud
Keyboard is well sized and consistent, with clear markings, and good consistent key travel
Good sized trackpad, works well with chromebook shortcuts e.g. two finger scroll up down is smooth, left right for back forward, three finger tab switching all great.
Plastic construction appears robust (maybe ABS), with a harder textured (maybe polycarbonate) faux-aluminium plastic keyboard surround/palm rest)
Lack of sharp edges means it is comfortable on lap (except for heat problem below), and easy to handle. It looks and feels kind of rugged (but havent dropped it, and don't particularly want to just yet.
Palmrests do not appear to get as warm as the underside.

    Whats not so good:
32GB storage is on the low side
The AMD A4 CPU is underwhelming and probably somewhat stretched - I wish this had a Ryzen 5 or something like that.
The AMD Radeon graphics did not impress. I am hoping there is some configuration option to fix the problem with Linux apps.
Some audio stuttering occasionaly encountered if other apps/tabs loading or busy
Gets a bit warm on the underside RHS while charging
Screen colours are a bit dull, lack vibrancy
There is a bit of keyboard flex
Touchpad is plastic, taps rattle in some areas.

    Problems so far:
Some dialog graphic elements were incomplete/cropped when extended on secondary 2k display
Linux apps displayed UI graphic corruption making them unusable. GIMP and Calibre had this problem.

    • +2

Update on Linux app corruption with a fix:
It appears this is a common problem with the HP 14
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Crostini/comments/eg0tfw/linux_apps…

The graphic corruption appears to be due to some problem with the GPU support in Crostini (the Linux environment) for this chromebook

Both Gimp 2.8 and Calibre 2.75.1 run acceptably when disabling the GPU support flag, accessible by accessing the page chrome://flags/#crostini-gpu-support

    • +1

Cheers for your detailed mini review.

As far as the hardware on this HP goes, all components are up to par and above for around the AU$300-$400

price for a 14" Current New Chromebook, the weakest link being the AMD A4-9120C and the occasional

underneath warmth/heat. As it's the first Chromebook with AMD CPU this was a bit of a test for both HP & AMD

and in future hopefully they can iron out software compatibility and increase performance with higher ranges

if successful and profitable. Nice to see your having fun experimenting and testing capabilities and posting

here for others to see, but most people keep the use of a chromebook reasonably simple and should nut run

      into too many problems

  • +1

I'm really tempted to get this. My first Chromebook was in 2014 - https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/313568/NOTEBOOKS_14.1/HP/CHROME14-Q005TU(F4A79PA).asp
It was on clearance for $260 had an intel celeron processor and I loved it. I used it for work as I used mostly internet based apps. I no longer had a need for it and gave it to my family member. Since then I've had to upgrade the HDD twice for them and even had water spilt on the keyboard, sizzled and recovered. I've always been on the lookout for a replacement but the only thing that holds me back is that it's an AMD…… If this was an intel I would get it in a second but unsure if I will bother.

  • +2

I have been running Accubattery pro on this chromebook with max brightness the whole time.
The included HP charger has the fastest charge, delivering max 4A while charging, compared with 3.5A from the Ausus c434 charger or 2.5A from the Bunnings Nutec powerboard with PD.
The included charger indicates output 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A and 15V/3A. Not sure how I'm getting 4A.
The app reports full battery estimate of maximum screen on time of 7h 13 min, so that should be a worst case scenario as it was measured at max brightness.

    • +2

The 4A is probably getting measured at the battery itself, after the voltage is stepped down by the Chromebook. If i understand it correctly, the charger may be delivering 3A at 12v to the Chromebook, and the Chromebook then steps down the 12v to about 8.4v or the charging voltage of a 2-cell li-ion. This would ideally result in a current boost to 12/8.4*3 = 4.28A. Take into account a loss of efficiency of 5-10% as heat, and that could explain the 4A charge rate that you're seeing.

      • +2

Thanks, I think the charger is a 45W so 15V at 3A and yes I think the charging current would be converted to the cell voltage so the reported current would probably be at that lower 8.4V level.

Anyhow TL;DR it charges fairly quickly.

  • +2

This has now gone back up to $299.00.
You can still get a coupon/gift voucher with the purchase, but it's no longer the sweet deal it used to be.

Kind of relieved, I was hovering over the buy button for days even though I didn't reeeeally need it :-)

  • Regret not doing a click and collect a few days ago… waiting on delivery now.

Did anyone do a chain order? Ie. order one use voucher to buy another and return the first?

I wanted to see if my mum can handle using the computer before committing to buying another.

  • +1

If you miss out on this, I would 100% recommend looking at:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/513255

    The $499 one is amazing.

    • +3

I'm gathering chromebooks at an alarming rate!

      • Can always sell your unwanted model(s) or gift them to friends or family members.

How many do you have now lol?

I have had one ( HP 14 ) for 4 years and although I really liked it, only got very light use over that time. The support just expired late last year, so got a Lenovo S330 14" on sale from officeworks and love it with lighter thinner build, usb c pd charging.

When the HP 14" was on sale at JB for that great $239 deal with $100 voucher/gift card with FHD IPS screen and decent sound, as well as 2 x usb c pd ports ( all improvements on the S330 ), I also could not resist and got one 300Km away for C & C lol.

Will gift the original HP 14 ( actually has faster Celeron 2955U than both newer ones I got, as well as also 4gb ram and in "As New Condition" with battery at 85% ), but keeping my newer two, until I upgrade one and get a 2 in 1 Touch Chromebook on a super sale in future.

  • +1

LOL less than before. Very close to adding the X2, but for the time being an asus c434 and the HP14, I am resisting the $499 X2 but don't know for how long. That X2 screen looks good though

  • +1

The listing has been removed by JB Hi-fi. Just received a notification that my order is now awaiting courier pick up.

  • +4

Did click and collect and today received my $100 voucher in my email. It doesn't have any expiry!

    • I just received my email voucher too, no expiry as well!

      • +1

Awesome! I still haven't received my voucher…I got mine on the weekend…

        • +1

Oops just checked and got mine today. No expiry either.
          Yay!

    • +2

Received mine too. My eGift card shows "No Expiry Date". However, if you check its balance on the JB website, it has an expiry date of 29/01/2119. Yes, it lasts for 99 years. It will last my lifetime. But don't expect to pass it to our children and grandchildren to use it.

      • Did you guys pick up your chromebook to finalise the sale as stated before you got the gift voucher emailed to you?

        • +1

No, my Chromebook will be delivered tomorrow but my gift voucher was emailed to me today.

  • +1

Got my e-gift card via email today, no expiry and you don't have to spend it all at once, so very good conditions.

  • Noticed the model is no longer on the JB website.

If I ordered via PayPal a couple of days ago, but didn't get any other emails from them, will the order go through? Just have the PayPal email as confirmation of the order..

  • doesnt support wyze cam app on playstore :(((

  • +1

Just to confirm that this machine does run uncomfortably hot. General browsing heats up tremendously. Wouldnt recommend to place it on lap.

    • Agreed, that's the only problem I've had so far compared to my other Chromebook.

      • +1

Not sure how hot this Chromebook is getting, but having experience with a few different model laptops

with radiant cooling ( no fan or vents usually in base of unit ), Lenovo 100S ibr14 with W10 & Pentium

        N3710, Dell Inspiron 11 with W10 & Pentium N3710, Acer Swift 1 with W10 & Celeron N4100, Lenovo

        Thinkpad 11e 5th Gen with W10 & Intel 7Y-54 and a Lenovo S330 Chromebook with Chrome OS & Mediatek

MT8173 and I have to say they all get warm, sometimes even hot on hot days underneath when being pushed.

Some of them get a bit hotter than others, but all still usable when on those hot days just put a

sleeve or better still a laptop raiser for support/angle as well as keep heat of if on your lap.

I have not seen any throttling because of excess heat internally ( although it might have happened ).

I much prefer a laptop to get warm on bottom if it's radiant cooling and just put it on a raiser if

needed and have the laptop being completely quiet.

Once you use a completely silent laptop, it's hard to go back to one with that noisy winding fan sound.

        • +2

I measured the base to get to 50 degrees C, hottest in the middle, during high system load. It can be a bit uncomfortable on the lap on hot days.

  • +1

Has anyone not received their gift card yet?
I ordered 3 on the 24th, one for me and two for my family, 3 seperate orders. Only 1 received a gift card

    • "kimlo" Same here. I ordered/paid and got confirmation for a C & C on Jan 26th ( 11 days ago ).

I still have not picked it up as it's 300 Km away lol, but not sure if that has any bearing on "completed order."

  • +1

I've got the device and for the $$ it's pretty nice, I hope someone who knows ChromeOS can advise me. I keep hitting the search key when looking for capslock - this is slightly annoying. But the main one

    • The shortcut to launch the Google assistant "Search+A" does not work.

    Any ideas?

    • +2

Caps lock can be turned on using Alt+Search
Also ctrl+alt+/ brings up all the shortcuts.
For me the assistant is also disabled (I think because I used a G Suite account), but when I use Search+A, I get a message stating the assistant is disabled.

      • i turned on dictation in the accessibility settings, and the assistant shortcut started working…

  • As mentioned above by "kimlo" have people received their emailed "gift cards/vouchers" from this deal.

I am also still waiting, although have not picked up my C&C yet.

  • +1

    Using this laptop right now.

Great, much better than the one I got 4 years ago for the Amazon deal of roughly $140 for memory. I have heaps of tabs open and don't have any issues. I've had up to 10 and not a problem at all.

Haven't used it with Google Docs much or anything yet though, that may restrict it a little if you have a lot of apps open.

  • Is there anything that can be used for photo editing? Tried lightroom, it's rubbish, seems to try to upload my files rather than just opening them for some reason. Wanting to make an astro panorama, don't care if it takes ages. Something that works with raw files preferably.

    • Can't you just download an app?

      • +1

There are about a million that say they can do these things, from experience most apps don't do what they promise. Being able to deal with raws limits it a fair bit as well, was hoping someone who's been using Chromebooks for a while might know something that will do the job.

  • +2

I got an email stating the order is delayed until 'early Feb' but still waiting for both delivery and the voucher…

    • +1

Followed up JB who dispatched yesterday and arriving today woo!

I'm in VIC if that helps anyone

      • Just wondering if you received the gift voucher/coupon already as an email before you received your unit by mail now over 2 weeks after orders?

I ordered C & C and have not picked mine up, but no email for any GF or coupons ( checked my spam too ).

        • +1

I'm also waiting for mine to be delivered. According to the email I received, the bonus gift cards are emailed to customers approximately 2 weeks after order completion/dispatch.

It's back in stock on the JB website so I'm guessing we shoud be getting ours next week.

          • @adr8: So you ordered for delivery when deal was on, expecting your delivery next week, and then after dispatch date hoping to get the gift voucher emailed within approx 2 weeks.

So you could wait another 2 1/2 to 3 weeks still.

In my case it is Click & Collect and I still have not collected, but as I paid for it 3 weeks ago, was hoping to get mine already, but not the case.

@ozhunter68: Online purchasers will receive a gift card via email 2 weeks from order completion.

So guess I need to wait another 2 weeks from now.
