Looking to change to Occupational Therapy - What is it like?

Hi everyone,

I have been working in the technology sector at a bank for the past 2 years and I am contemplating leaving my job to study a Masters in Occupational Therapy. As it is quite a big change, I am hoping to talk to people currently in the field to get a better idea of what the job entails and whether it is something I want to do.

It’s a bit of a shot in the dark but I was wondering if there are any occupational therapists on here who are willing to spare some time to chat about their everyday tasks, whether they enjoy it or not etc?

The reason I am looking to change is that while I do enjoy my job and my team – it’s very comfortable with good hours and benefits, I cannot see myself working in corporate/commerce for the rest of my life as I personally find it very meaningless and not rewarding. I’m not saying that it’s not an important part of society but I personally rather work in a field where I can see the direct impact of my work on individuals, a job where I can talk to them and help them directly.

I believe that working in the health science field can help me achieve this and as I am still young with no other responsibilities, I feel as though this is the best time to do a career change. However, while the job sounds good like what I want to do on paper, I don’t have much visibility of what the job would actually involve and I am worried that I would leave my current job, do the Masters and then discover that I don’t actually enjoy being an Occupational Therapist either so that’s why I’m hoping to talk to some people who actually work in the field.

Any help would be appreciated!
