If someone posts something dangerously wrong, or horribly rude or whatever, a -ve vote is much quicker than trying to argue. If the person is reasonable, they might see the -ve score and consider adjusting their behaviour. If the person is unreasonable, they wouldn't listen to your response anyway…

I have a good track history of saying "I like X" and people saying "no you're wrong" and downvoting me when I point out they couldn't possibly decide what I do and don't like. Ahhh the trolls of OzBargain. Such a fun bunch.
I agree with this. Never enough negs to hand out for the crap people post on here. The number of stupid, unhelpful comments and people trying to be funny and failing miserably is out of control.
I agree with more than 5 negs, I only read comments that have a lot of votes, plus or neg.
I think 5 is plenty because bandwagoning happens quite often.
Perhaps adopting a system like Reddit has that hides the number of votes until 1 hour after might not be a bad thing.
I think hiding votes would make things worse, if someone says something that is very wrong, if the comment is already at -3 or -4 I don't neg them as one more won't increase the message much, I save my negs for messages that aren't negged yet or are only at -1 or -2. If the votes are hidden then anyone like me will pile all their negs on and after the hour they'll be at -20
