Apple care + on Macbook Pro 16

Buying a macbook pro 16 @ around 3.5k
apple care is a RIP OFF almost 500$

Considering that i'll use the computer for 3 years+, but I do look after my stuff REALLY well, would it be a good deal?
my 2016 pro 13" is looking new, never had to open it, so apple care+ was money in the bin

did other ozbargainers consider other options that also cover theft/damage?
Say, doing some sort of insurance could even end up cheaper?

Parts-wise, if something breaks down in the computer down the track, how likely it is to cost more than those $500 anyway?
that said, saving the $500 as a buffer in case something goes wrong could be an idea too…

thanks for your help!

I think Apple care is targeted at:
    * those with NFI about IT and need phone support
    * those who don't understand warranty and ACL

    Ie. Not you

    It's called contents insurance

    if someone
    - slams the lid closed with a pen on the keyboard
    - knocks over a coffee near your macbook pro
you'll have to buy a new one for $3.5k.
If you buy Applecare+ for $500 now, you'll fork out < $429 for repair.

If you want coverage against theft, insurance will cost you about the same amount again (over 3 three years). Contents insurance may/may not need it to be specially listed.

Its a tough decision - coverage cost is proportion to the volume of claims.

Put the money towards insurance, then you’ll be covered for theft and accidental damage. I’m with Marsh advantage and I pay a $100 excess no matter how many times I claim. Apple provide support for the life of the product regardless of AppleCare and Australian consumer laws will cover you for up to 5 years if the product fails you outside of negligence. AppleCare is a straight up wrought as are all extended warranties IMHO.

  • RACV Single Item Insurance:

Theft cover anywhere in Australia , Accidental damage anywhere in Australia

Replacement Value: $4300, Item Excess $150, Annual Premium $182.82

    • Does this "pay market value" in practice? If an three year old $5000 macbook pro was stolen, do they pay $5000 or $1000?

New for old, they will pay out the current equivalent value for a new machine

  • If you plan on having it for a long time (you probably will as macbooks last) I'd fork out for it. A MacBook Air to just replace the casing, cost more than the actual device, new when you consider parts and labour.

    Cost benefit mate….

  • Recently after warranty expired, my connector for the camera card became corroded will cost me about 250 to replace it. Not sure if Apple care would have covered it, but most likely. Just an example of something small that can go wrong.

should have gone with the ACL instead
