Wiha 24-in-1 : Screw stuck in the tube

This is a long shot but let me give it a go.

Right - so my son managed to put a screw into the holder and it's stuck there. I have tried using a safety pin to extract it but it is stuck on solid. I managed to remove the wobbly part (what is it there for anyway?) at the other end. I was hoping it may be hollow through the shaft and I could try pushing the screw out from the other end. No luck. There is a little "spigot" like thing at the back and I can't get it off. I have tried my best with a plier but this won't budge.

The wobbly part: The grey outer is just a shell. Within there is a small bearing attached to the spigot by a C-clip. I have gotten the bearing off as well.

Anything else I can try. At this point I don't think I can salvage the screwdriver but want to see how this thing is put together.

  • It's in one piece. Bend a wire into u shape and try for the stuck screw.

And if that doesn't work, it's percussive maintenance time.

Drop the screwdriver onto a hard surface so the shock knocks the screw off the magnet.

  • I use this for work everyday.

Can't help with the stuck screw, it's a strong magnet.

The wobbly bit is there for high-speed one-handed screwing. @_@"

  • Try heating the outer shell so it expands enough for you to use the pliers to yank out the screw. Just an idea.

      Just an idea.

      Yeah… nah.

On the other hand you could heat it up enough so the screw will melt and come out. Ackshually, if you heat it up enough the magnet will stop being a magnet.

      • I tried this too but nope didn't have any effect.

          Don't heat it up.

Don't bang it against concrete, drop (or throw) it. You want a very sharp shock, holding onto it dampens the shock.

Despite that, it's not going to be easy.

  • Hard to say without seeing it but a barbed wire key extractor might work. Unlikely you have one so it'd be a visit to a locksmith and they may charge as much as it's worth. Surprised you can't get it out just by banging it against a bench etc. You have tried that right?

    • Yep, tried banging against a concrete floor.

  • So, is it actually the magnet that is holding the screw in. My! That really is a strong magnet.

Do you have access to a stronger magnet?

One thing you can try is glue. Put a drop of superglue on the end of a stick, poke that in the tube and hopefully it'll stick to the screw.

Wait until it dries and maybe yoink it back out.

    • I will try this.

      • Forgot to update the thread. This did the trick, @D C. Thanks for the hint.
