SONY 55X8500C Backlight Failed

Hi
My (I think) 3 years old X8500C failed. Eventhough the C series is 2015 model, I purchased it in 2017 from Myer.
Last week it stopped working with blinking red light (6 times). I used to get it worked by unplugging it from the power and and plug it back after a while. Also as soon as it started doing it we called Sony. Sony said they need to send a tech out (booked in for today). Since last night the unplugging and plunging it back stopped working either..

The tech came today and said backlight is gone. The whole screen needs to be replaced he said. He is going to send a quote when he goes back to office.

I will appreciate any advice from you as to my options / rights…

Could I get Sony to cover the cost of repairing?
Could I get a refund or a voucher/discount to get a new TV?
or I have no rights at all. I have to get it repaired or buy a new TV at my cost?

thank yo so much in advance..

ACL rights are against the retailer. Find your receipt, contact Myer.

    • Thank you,
Unfortunately I cannot find the receipt anywhere. So you are suggesting to contact Myer before Sony? I was thinking Myer has got nothing to it

Myer sold you the TV, they owe you the statutory responsibilities under the ACL. As for the receipt, check the statement for your method of payment to see if you have any other proof of purchase.

      • If you can't find the receipt (or a suitable proof of purchase) then the TV is 5 years old. If you can find the receipt proving that it's 3 years old you will likely have more luck.

but isn't the warranty only 1-2yr?
not saying they shouldn't help the friend above but why would myer help?

Manufacturer's warranty might be 2 years. Under ACL - while I'm usually against people claiming unreasonably long consumer guarantee periods, 3 years is (to me anyway) comfortably how long a brand name TV should last.

Having said that, released in 2015 and bought in 2017, this might have been sold on clearance for very cheap, which (@OP) may well affect how long that statutory guarantee period would run for.

Either way though, the people to contact first are Myer.

I feel Any tv should definately last more than 3 years… and more than 5.. im on the 'anything less than 10 years wagon' is crap, but acknowledge things age and breakdown. Also Not saying ACL on 6 plus yr old items is a goer, maybe 4 yrs, TV and price dependant..

Our cheapy Myer bought tv/dvd combo that we use as a monitor is probably 6yrs old, still going strong.

my current 38" Panasonic is around 11yrs.. about 2 years ago it started to very occasionally turn off then back on all by itself, since stopped doing that ages ago, but now does make a click, ch'k, tsk (or something) noise occasionally.

If either went, we would not like it, but would be satisfied.

    • Agreed!

I found the credit card statement. I bought it on 01 April 2017. However there is no detail in the transaction. It just says MYER on it.
Now I am going to try my luck with the store. I will keep you guys updated.

  • Myer said sorry they cannot help waranty is only 1 year.
Called ACCC They said email myer, if they dont respond in a reasonable timeframe let Fair trading now about
