VoIP for HFC NBN router recommendations

Would like some suggestions on a good VoIP router for HFC NBN, I need to be able to add more than one sip provider and need to be able to plug in my old landline phone.
I have been looking at the TP-Link Archer VR500v, is there a better option? I only need the router part and nothing too fancy.

I see that Kogan are selling it as -
"Kogan Internet Wireless-AC NBN-Ready ADSL2+/VDSL Modem & Router" for $69
I called them and they said it's the same hardware as the TP-Link Archer VR500v, selling on Kogan.com.au for $79, I asked if the firmware had been changed, they said yes. Not sure what has been done.

Also have been looking at the NetComm NF10WV, but am leaning more towards the TP-Link.
Will both of those allow more than one sip line?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Won't you get one from your NBN provider? I signed with TPG and got a TP-Link Archer VR1600v - worked fine at 100/40 with tons of devices connected.

    • I prefer to sign up without a contract (month to month) so you pay for the router and would like to pick my own if I am paying anyhow. I also need one with voip that will allow me to add multiple sip providers.

I was looking into signing up with TPG but was told by a rep that I can't use my own sip provider with thair modem, I didn't know that they used TP-Link Archer VR1600v, I was also told by them that on HFC the NBN box is not the modem and I need a modem router to connect. This is not what I have read previously about HFC. Since then I have checked the prices and decided to go with someone else.

By the way can you tell me if you can add multiple sip providers and multiple sip accounts for a provider with the TP-Link Archer VR1600v you were given?

  • +1

The HFC modem is provided by NBNco, the router is provided by your ISP. The router is what everything connects to - the modem is essentially in bridged mode and inaccessible. The router connects to TPG using PPPoE. In short what they said is bollocks.

TPG doesn't provide SIP info and locks the modem from "full" user access. They do this by having an admin account, which looks like full administrator but in fact hides some advanced settings like the SIP pages. There is an "su" superuser account that shows the advanced settings, including SIP/telephony, that only TPG are meant to access. I have the su login so I use it all the time.

The telephony page allows the addition of multiple numbers, each with their own provider login details. I haven't tried it so I have no idea if it works.

    • Thanks this is what I thought with HFC, I new they were talking rubbish. This is exactly the information I was looking for, I will be passing on TPG and getting my own router with full user access.
I only need the lower spec model like the TP-Link Archer VR500v as my speed will be lower than your plan prob NBN50 or NBN25.

I just need someone to confirm that multiple sip providers will work with the TP-Link Archer VR500v.

I tried to find the stock frimware for TP-Link Archer VR… for it to be flashed but couldn't find it.

  • Dependng on your isp and if you like tinkering you can look in to technicolor routers, the voip is locked to telstra but there is a giant thread on whirlpool forums with link to rooting and enabling VoIP, does take effort but they are great value and my dja0230 supports 2 VoIP ports and multiple sip providers

  • @lunchbox99 how did you find the wifi range on the TP-Link Archer VR1600v?
