Overseas ATM Charged Me Eight Times More than The Expected Exchange Rate When Using ING Card

I've been travelling in Jordan for last three days.

I've brought my ING everday banking debit card and made sure I'm eligible for overseas ATM withdrawal fee reimbursements.

I've withdrawn a small amount of Jordanian dollars at a hotel (4-5 star) ATM that according to current exchange rates would be equivalent to $10AUD. But instead it's been charged to ING at about $80AUD. And the sad thing is, I did it four times to get small notes and each transaction is the same.

Each transaction ended with the ATM saying unfortunately they couldn't provide a receipt at this time. Which at the time I didn't consider suspicious - I just thought it was out of paper or something.

I withdrew money at another hotel previously without any problems - the exchange rate was as expected.

I've contacted ING via their app but have received no response - probably because it's the weekend.

Is this an error? Or is it fraudulent? Or do some ATMs have exorbitant exchange rates?

I haven't done much overseas travel before so would also appreciate:
-any advice at what to do at future ATMs whilst travelling overseas to stop this happening again;
-what else I should do, besides my complaint to ING (e.g. complain to hotel?)
-any predictions as to what will happen i.e. will I get some money back from the transactions I've made

Thanks in advance.

  • Are you sure it's not an ATM fee?

Can you clearly state how much you requested from the ATM, how much you got and how much you were charged?

    • 5 Jordanian came to 82.50 Australian.

Was it from the Movenpick Petra? Similar story was posted on Tripadvisor.

Yes. It's Movenpick Petra. The fact that you guessed, scares me. Going to have to do some Googling.

In this thread someone said that the ATM charged the equivalent of 70 USD in fees - outrageous!

My advice would be to wait for it to clear, and then if ING does not refund that ATM fee (as they do for all others), complain to ING (even though it seems that it's the ATM that's ripping you off, not ING).

Edit: Oh and you asked for advice for the future when travelling. In general, it's always safest to use a bank's ATM rather than private ones (like in hotels), although I have never heard of a ripoff like this before!

  • TripAdvisor's Aus that they convert the Jordanian into a US rate and request that amount to your bank. Massive mark up

    never had that issue.

I only use big bank ATMs when overseas

  • seems like dodgy atm fee charges, make sure to use only bank ATMs when overseas. I ran into a similar situation when using Macquarie Debit in Thailand and the bank refused when i claimed fraud, unless i have cctv record of the ATM when i did the withdrawal and police statement.

If you use a card for $10 transactions while travelling, you will get burned sooner or later.

  • ATM - always take out the maximum amount that you will need, that way you only pay the ATM Owners Fee once.
Only use a 'big Bank's' ATM!

    Thanks for all the comments.

Good news, ING updated the transactions to be $20.62 AUD instead of 82.50 AUD.

And rebated a $2.50 ATM fee

But also another $10.31 AUD international transaction fee.

Which lowers everything down to: $5 Jordanian for $10.31 Australian.

And that is a very reasonable amount! Very happy.

I haven't heard anything from ING so not sure if it's because I complained or automatic.

So great outcome and I can continue travelling in peace.

But I will keep an eye out for which bank I use….

    • Might have been an ATM fee, ING luckily refunds all fees but takes few business days for the returns to get through.

I'm just back from travelling in South America and each ATM was charging around 30 Soles (~AU$14)
I would have been $70 out of pocket if I used Citi bank plus instead of ING

  • I thought Jordan was giving Chile and Argentina a run for their money on ATM fees for a moment!

  • Not very smart paying a 50% international transaction fee !

And your happy OP other would say that robbery ?

I know ING is refunding all ATM fees etc but it doesn't mean we should keep making small withdrawals at ultra expensive ATM (not suggesting OP did it willingly). If we keep doing that, ING might soon decide that it's costing them too much and withdraw this perk.

When I'm traveling, I try to get the max amount I think I can get through before I leave that country at each withdrawal (to minimise the number of withdrawal I have to make) & choose the ATM with the most reasonable ATM fee in that area. (Ie. I still act as if I had to pay for it myself.)

    • I have not had a single atm fee rebated this month, i don't know what's going on with my ING account. ING has been useless.
