Minimum Outlets Requirement for Ducted Aircon Zone

Hi Ozbargainer,
Need some insights of you guys, regarding aircon zoning.
Is there any minimum outlet required to determined the zone of the aircon? In other words; Can I install each bedroom with only one outlet with its own zone? 3 small bedrooms with 3 separate zone?
The brand I’m looking: MHI FDUA100V2 / FDC100VNP?
I saw a few companies have the packages for this model with only 2 zones included. Extra zones attracts $250 cost to be installed.

Hence, I need some opinion or first hand experience to determine if extra zone is necessary?
Thanks.

  • We have just installed ducted aircon with 16 outlets split into 7 zones. Each zone has a separate controller and of the 7 zones, 4 are single outlets installed in the bedrooms each with their own controller

    • Thanks for the comment. The one that I was looking was only one single controller with 4 zones (3 bedrooms + 1 Lounge room ). There is no controller on each room. Therefore I got confuse when they said extra zone can be added with extra cost, but with only 1 controller.

I would suggest the price quoted of $250 (each) would be for a separate temperature control unit for each outlet

        • Hi Ocker, did you get the outdoor unit installed on the ground or wall mounted?

@BargainDetective: We had the Actron ESP Ultima SRD191C installed on the ground. Outdoor unit weighs 190kg

You can have a single outlet as it's own zone. I have the master bedroom for example as it's own zone with just a one outlet. When I last replaced the unit (Jan '19) I was quoted $150 per zone but that was without the outlet as I was reusing the existing so just the ducting, motor/valve and wiring. Could've done it a little cheaper by reusing the existing ducting but decided to upgrade to a higher insulation ducting.

    • Is that $150 with its own controller panel ?

Single central control panel for the whole house.

        • Did you get the outdoor unit wall mounted or just on poly slab grounded? I’m considering about the vibration that might or might not vibe through the brick veneered wall when it’s on operation.

We have a samsung Ducted 12.5w system similar to this but older https://www.samsung.com/au/business/air-conditioners/ac-cac-… , it was installed before we moved into our house without zoning. Each room in our home has an outlet with three in the living area which is open plan living/dining/kitchen (+3 bedrooms).

Once we moved in, we wanted to create zones to control where and when the air flowed from room to room so I ended up after having a few quotes with the tech explaining things to me.

I ended up choosing to install the Airtouch 3 zone control system (now it seems discontinued with Airtouch 4 out now (https://www.airtouch.net.au/airtouch/airtouch-4/)). it allows me to control as many outlets as needed (there is a max but I can't recall what that is) This controller also will control 2 systems if you needed that many. I can control my air con via the internet too using an airtouch app too.

They had to install what I will call a "relay" on each zone where the ducts go into the rooms via the ceiling to control the air flow for zoning. In each bedroom is a sensor to monitor the temp in that room, the living area is monitored via the controller/remote on the wall I think.

I am very pleased with our choice. The original cost for the A/C was $7,700 back in 2015 and we paid $2338.00 +GST. for the added zoning in 2018. We were told that if you install zoning when you install the AirCon it would have been less expensive. Like half what we paid for the zoning on top of the cost for the AirCon.

    Hope this helps you.

    • Thanks for your thorough reply. I learnt something new today.

    • @Sunshine Moon: How is the Samsung Outdoor unit performing in term of noise? Did you get it installed on the ground or wall mounted? I am looking at MHI brand with the outdoor unit noise 70DbA (I have no idea how loud it is in real life). The quote says installation would be on the poly slab, I just wondering if I preferred to put it on the wall mounted bracket would be any better?
