Cloud Storage - Unlimited or Very Very Big - for Any and All File Types

Need a cloud. A very big one.

With some kind of organisation feature - especially finding duplicate files.
Security or encryption would be nice if that's even possible but is not essential.

Existing threads https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/476980 are about places 1tb etc. Definitely not big enough.

(I have many TBs of hard drives all in a mess. I want to put all my stuff in one pile so I can finally get it organised. And then when organised download it all again to local storage in case the cloud blows up. And then possibly/probably keep the cloud (or transfer to another cloud) as a backup in case my house burns down.)

Who can I trust?

G-suite business. Pool together with someone. You can also try the education g-suite pooling trick if you want to save money.

All the features you want are probably best suited as a DIY solution and not related to the cloud service. I wouldn't trust a backup software or solution to do proper encryption and send it to your cloud. That's my personal opinion though.

My preferred "method" is Usenet because it's truely unlimited storage and truly unlimited up and down speed. It's not automated out of the box though but it can be using Linux and probably can be on Windows or any OS, you can google for guides.

Other than not being automated downsides are anyone has access to files (but uploads are encrypted … and no one is going to know anything, it's unlikely that anyone else will touch them unless you name them something dumb) and there is a 10 - 20 % upload on top of whatever you upload for error correction which may be required when downloading.

And files last 10 years and something days from the day they're uploaded then they're deleted although more days may be added.

The upside of unlimited storage and download speed are very big. You can upload a backup everyday and get every single one back at maximum speed.

The reason i keep bringing up speed is a lot of backup services F you when you want to download everything after a disaster so be careful.

Oh yeah the biggest upside for Usenet … 5 USD a month.

    • I never thought of that one, I have been using it for over 10 years. It's a bit more complex to set up but a smart way to take advantage.

The best solution I've found is OneDrive (6 x 1tb for for ~$80 per year), combined with a program called Stablebit to pool the 6 accounts together to act like a single hard drive on your computer. For finding duplicate files, you could then run clonespy or something similar (I highly recommend clonespy after having tried quite a few duplicate file finders).

Edit: Stablebit also encrypts your files if you're interested in that.

  • What kind of content, legit or otherwise? If it's 'family and wedding movies', you're better off creating your own NAS with Plex software.

  • iDrive has a current deal. 5TB at $3.48 USD for the first year then $69.50 thereafter.

  • Google photos for unlimited free backups of 1080p vids and 16mp pics

    • i thought i saw in another thread they auto convert raw to jpg and compress larger files?

      • It's just another form of backup and it's free

If you want it kept the same, you'll need to pay

  • Be your own cloud? Synology NAS and use its drive software? Bit more up front, but cheaper in the long run.

    Amazon S3?

  • Crashplan - https://www.crashplan.com/. $10 USD per device/per month, unlimited storage, file versioning, encryption etc.
It's advertised for Small Businesses but I used them for personal without any issues.

Not sure about the organisation/de-dupe features you're after but it's worth checking them out.
