Save Me from Duty Free Rip off!

Hello fellow ozbargainers,

I am planning to go on vacation in March. My sister is currently living in a country that I will be transiting through and as I have a good amount of layover time there (cheapest ticket), I am planning to meet her . Normally I gift her ozbargained watches/perfumes/jewellery from Australia. Last time she mentioned that she liked the perfume “Sarah Jessica parker lovely” (which I got comparatively cheap from Chemist warehouse) and I thought of giving her a year’s worth of supply this time. The issue is liquids (more than 100ml) are not allowed in cabin baggage. As I am on transit I won’t have access to my checked in baggage when I meet her. Buying from duty free is an option but that will put a big hole in my wallet.

Does any of you kind folks have a better idea ?

100ml is ok. buy multiples of it. as long as it fits in the plastic pouch.

You mean multiple 100ml bottles are allowed ?

      • +2

        yes.

and they must all fit in a one quart (one liter) clear zip top bag.

        • Great..Thanks you very much. I checked the home affairs website again. Now I notice that it states containers.

Liquid, aerosol or gel items must be in containers of 100 millilitres (volume), 100 grams (weight) or less.

Containers must fit into one transparent and re-sealable plastic bag like a snap-lock sandwich bag.

Waiting for next CW sale :)

@quiteguy: Don't forget to factor in all other liquid that you'll have with you for the flight (e.g. toothpaste, eye drop, moisturizer, etc). Each traveler is only allowed to carry 1 clear plastic bag of liquid items.

A year's supply? 100ml is more than enough.

    • I guess I gave her a 100ml bottle last time. It was the first time that she liked something I gifted her. So was planning to give a few bottles this time.

My recommendation is that unless you know she has finished the last bottle, or asked to top get more bottles, don't get her another one, let alone few bottles of the exact same thing.

Go to myer/priceline /cw and find out similar types of perfumes from other brands. Ie. If she likes sweet perfumes, get something sweet. I'm not sure what the SJP one smells like.

  • Does she drink the stuff. Dab on the back of the ear, elbow, u=inner wrist, & behind the knee. Shouldn't need that much even if she uses it every day. How many bottles did she go through.

Big W sells travel kits and travel sized toiletries.

    • Dont think it'll have the same gift appeal…

  • prolly spray it like mens deodorant, but, a can at a time

In addition to the requested bottle, why don't you include a new bottle each time. That way, your sister will be able to try new scents and might like them even better than the only one she's ever had.

most airlines will let you "short check" your bags so you can pick them up in the stopover country. You just have to ask them at check in, and will have to re-check them in so allow a bit of extra time to do that.
