Weird Browser Behaviour

Over the last couple of months my browsers have been doing funny things like closing by themselves. And often, if Firefox closes or does an update then Brave will shut down as well. I can't time it to the day but I suspect it started around the time of the last Windows 10 update (1909).
Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problems?

(Yes, have scanned for viruses, malware etc :) )

Cheers

  • Have you looked in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for errors? Or the System log in there?

If you find some that look relevant, the error descriptions are usually not that helpful but you may be able to learn something by Googling the Event ID and/or description.

    • Cheers, had a quick look (should have done that first I guess? :) )
Got a lot of this error: svchost (13088,R,98) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-18: Error -1023 (0xfffffc01) occurred while opening logfile C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\EDB.log.

Seems to correspond to the browser crashes….

  • Nope.

    Hasn't happened to me.

Have you tried disabling 3D hardware acceleration in the browser's settings? You may have to google to find the setting in about:config or similar.

  • Might be worth checking if it still happens if you start Firefox in safe mode or a new default profile. If that fixes it, it's probably one of the add-on's or plugins.

  • I’ve noticed that if you browse certain naughty hanky lanky handy sites they will pop up large ads which seem unclosable. If you manage to close one another opens up and you have to turn off the computer which isn’t very fun during peak moments

    • …use task manager to quit the application instead you perv! :D

I’ll give it a go. Certainly beats just listening to the sound only and using your imagination

    • You are using the wrong site :P

  • Hi Try doing a restore to an earlier date,
did you download the latest version of FireFox,I tried it and I lost my Hotmail but it did not harm my ,gmail,or yahoo mail,

  • Give this guy a call. He has shown plenty of patience already. Let him deal with the intermittent problem, the hardest kind to isolate and fix.

  • Thanks all. The problem is fairly intermittent so it isn't a huge deal but was curious to get it sorted either way. As I said, it only started in the last 2 months or so so I suspect it has something to do with the last W10 update. It's just funny how Brave shuts down (sometimes)when Firefox shuts down or restarts. :)

    • I'm on 1909 for like 5 PC's and have 0 problems you describe. Perhaps need to look at a re-install but it sounds more like something malicious or other..

Reinstall sounds about right, current install was a copy over from Windows 7, then to an SSD, then to another SSD. Don't think I've done a fresh install for a LONG time. Too much hassle to setup all my programs and settings again. :)

I do it about once a year, there is an article from Microsoft themselves suggesting this in practice as a recommendation. If you have shrunk to SSD and upgraded to win7 ect then for sanity's sake I would be doing it. Don't look at it so much as a hassle but a clean start, you can find many programs and tools to assist with it also. G'luck

@wiipantz: Cheers. Might grab another SSD and set that up from scratch and work it up from there> :)
