I find beer, like a fine wine, improves with age ;)

A RIS or a good barley wine, sure. Some lagers, and even English ales fine . But cheap pale ale like this, no chance. Still completely safe to drink, but flavourwise it's going to turn to nothing, or if it has pride of ringwood, to dirt.

Good thing this isn't a pale ale.

        • what's so special about lagers and english ales that makes them immune to tasting like crap when past their best before date?

          • @MuddyClear: I can assure you that XXXX Gold gets even worse after it's use by (which is hard to believe). I bought a carton to use for beer pong at a party but no one would touch the stuff. After the party the carton sat around my house until it was well past its use by date when I finally found a younger relative who would take it. By that stage they were overly fizzy and overflowed when you opened them, and tasted especially bad.

            • @macrocephalic: XXXX Gold is a larger… hmmm I think it comes down to how well it’s been stored

    • Most of the people who ask about BB or packed on dates aren't asking because of any concern about getting sick or safety. They're concerned with the quality and flavour of the beer.

It's different depending on the beer style, but hop-forward beers (IPA's and some Pale Ales) are best consumed within a few months of brewing. This is because the flavour and aroma of hops, unfortunately, fade quite quickly.

This beer showcases Galaxy hops. A locally grown hop variety, made famous largely by Stone & Wood Pacific Ale. Assuming the BB date on the beer in this post is 12 months, the Galaxy will have faded significantly if it's close to the date.

And even for those styles that might improve with age (imperial stouts, barleywines, farmhouse ales), most brewers will tell you they don't make a beer with the intention of it being cellared, because of all the variables outside of their control, which could make it deteriorate.

The domestic lagers we've become used to in Australia, at least until the growth of craft, are made with shelf stability in mind. I'd also argue that this is also an indicator as to the amount of flavour in them begin with.

  • Need to wait another month like the last batch for delivery.

Then they just ship the carton with a sticker on it, forget an extra box or tape… It's just slapped with a sticker and sent to Aus post.

Not worth it. I thought it was, but it's really not.

What's the issues sending it without extra packaging?
Seems a better option for the environment.

      • Your neighbors think you’re an alcoholic.

I'd be more concerned about my neighbors if they hadn't noticed that already

The packaging for a slab of beer isn't meant for moving and stacking in an individual case like this - holds up well on a pallet but easily destroyed when thrown around singly.

    • As long as it misses the guaranteed delivery date, who cares $$$

Didn't need it but bought. Added surprise as well. At checkout, there was a banner saying $20 off with this order by joining Ebay Plus. Joined with free trial. Total come down to $19 delivered. Willhave to remember to cancel before trial expires.

  • Any good?

It's a fairly average beer - it's the style of Stone & Wood without as much flavour. Really easy to drink if that's your only criteria, and probably better than anything else you would typically get at this price, but nothing to cross the road for.

    • Funny, I rather like Wild Yak and definitely prefer it to "Stone & Wood"… Almost like there're "different grooves for different moves" - who'd've thought!?

      • You're the first person I've ever heard say that, usually if people like the ultra-fruity style, they're all over Stone and Wood and this is just a poor imitation. What do you like better about it?

        • I like both, but think I prefer Wild Yak. I don't like the taste of most pale beers, so to me it's an advantage that these are fruity without a strong taste.

        • I think Wild Yak is better balanced for me, not too fruity/flowery but still enough that is refreshing and can be tasted. I fell like "Stone & Wood" is heavy handed and had a word heaviness to it, for lack of a better word - not in the taste as such, just sort of 'about' it.

          • @nebakke: I think you're looking for 'intensity', and I guess I get what you mean.
