ADSL or Wi-Fi as an Alternative to nbn

I am about to rent an apartment and it does not have cable or NBN. I want to be able to game and I am looking at ADSL providers. I was wondering if anyone knows what service is available in the NSW Eastwood (Ryde) area has good enough (stable and decently low ping) Internet for two gamers playing League of Legends at the same time?

All NBN providers have stated that NBN will be 'rolling' in in July 2020 for the property I'm about to rent, but down the street they already have it. D:

WiFi is a way to distribute internet, not provide it. Do you mean 4G?

    • Yes I was looking at maybe doing 4g instead, but it seems too expensive.

  • If by Wi-Fi you meant 4G / cellular, definitely get ADSL if you play League (or any online games). 4G usually has too much packet loss to be any good for gaming on - when my old ADSL connection would sometimes drop out, I'd try playing tethered from my phone, and it'd be a horrible stuttery mess.

On a side note, if you can get cable internet (Optus or Telstra), go for that over ADSL. Otherwise ADSL it is.

    • I wish I could get cable. They said they would provide a modem for (99$) or I can provide my own. Is It worth it to get my own modem and if so what have you found had the best performance?

      • For ADSL, pretty much any modem will be decent. Most (or all) ADSL modems will have a built WiFi access point - for the most part, if you pay more, you'll get higher WiFi speeds / better coverage in your apartment. If their modem has built in WiFi and your apartment isn't very big, it'll probably do okay.

I've got an ASUS DSL-AC68U at the moment, which is starting to get a little old, but it does a great job. They're still sold for around $250. Keep in mind that ADSL modem-routers are less common than they used to be, with the NBN rollout. You mentioned that you'll get NBN in just a few months; you won't need an ADSL modem for that, so if you can find a cheapo ADSL modem for less than $99, I'd get that now and upgrade to a nice router when you get NBN installed.

        Good luck :)

Don't be stingy on a modem and buy the 1 they sell you, buy your own and not a $99 one.

        • That's what I am looking into. Any recommendations?

Is it possible to just live somewhere else?

  • Have you considered home 4G or 5G broadband
    (not a 4G mobile/portable dongle)
Its a home broadband modem that picks up the 4G/5G signall and then broadcasts it around your home via wifi.
You just plug it into any power point though you should test all power points to see where you get the best signal.
There is also a portable battery powered modem option for people on the move.
These are great for renters since when you move you just unplug it and take it with you.
Optus currently has a great home wireless broadband deal…
    $68/mth for 500GB (offer ends 31/3/20)
Download speed could be anything up to 100MBps depending on the reception in your area.
