2011 Hiace Temperature Gauge Fault

there,

I have a 2011 Toyota Hiace lwb van and the temperature gauge isn’t working at all doesn’t even budge. I’ve tried so far…

temp sensor been replaced
Thermostat has been replaced
shorted the sensor to ground (didn’t move the needle at all)
replace the gauge with a new one (still doesn’t work)
belled out continuity between the sensor to the ecu - continuity

I’m really Struggling to figure out what’s going on with it I’ve spent just over 1k in mechanic and instrument repair fees any help will be appreciated!

My apologies edited post

  • If there is no continuity then you have a broken wire between the sensor and the gauge.

  • Take it to an auto electrician

  • +2

belled out continuity between the sensor to the ecu - no continuity

Then there is your issue. Check all the plugs between the ECU and the sensor. Pin has backed out. Corrosion on the pin. Crimped/cut wire.

Do you have an OBD reader to get the live feed from the sensor? If that reads nothing or never changes, then the issue is in the harness.

    Or

Bypass all that shit and just install an after market temp gauge.

  • My apologies I’ve edited post

Can confirm I get continuity between the sensor and ecu

  • Toyota’s don’t need a temp gauge. They run forever.

  • Na it seems way to complicated from ecu to gauge as there’s a million wires
I know it goes from the ecu under the seat the the passenger side fuse compartment then across to the gauge any tips to help?

  • What engine? You likely (but I can't remember exactly) have two temp sensors. A single wire one that goes straight to the dash, and a two pin that goes to the ecu.

    • 2.7litre petrol

      • From memory should be a two wire sensor for the ecu on the back of the head region, and the one wire sensor for the gauge front right of the engine ( right side when sitting in car), near the radiator hose where it goes into the block.

Which one have you been checking?

        • I’ve found both the front radiator sensor is on the hose/pipe and check that it looks fine then the one at the back of the engine is brand new
I shorted out the front sensor to ground and didn’t move the gauge at all unfortunately

          • @Mat1991: Check continuity from the front single wire sensor to the gauge.

            • @brendanm: Hi mate, thanks for your help so far!
I’ve tried so suss out the cables to the dash but there’s literally 40 cables struggling to determine which cables as it appears the colours have been messed with

              • @Mat1991: No problem mate. You will need a wiring diagram. Should be able to find one online easily enough I'd say, or get a Haynes or similar manual.

  • Update*** if I push the gauge past zero and then plug it back in it goes up to zero but still won’t read a temperature?

  • Update** in case anyone’s curious the car was detailed a few month back before I received it and the ECU sits under neath the drivers seat and was wet when it was cleaned. Fml 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • I’ve got the same issue.
What did you do with ecu? Did you need to replace it.
