NAS Prices/Recommendations (QNAP/Synology)

been looking at 4-bay NAS prices and they seem to have gone up in price

just wondering if it's a usual cycle or a reason for it?

I know Synology 918+ usually comes down to around $600 when stacked with coupons and the QNAP TS-453BE around $520 so just waiting

Does anyone have any opinions between the two models?

Synology SHR seems nice as I currently have a 10TB & 8TB shucked from the WD externals but the QNAP does have some nice features and is cheaper

I'm mainly looking to use it as storage and backup so I can free up space on my laptop, a bit of media playback on tv, I should be fine without transcoding with Kodi on the TV, currently been playing video files from shared USB drive on router,

thanks

  • Yeah only Synology has shr. But long a go I notice qnap has USB ports in the front that is very good, Synology is at the back. Maybe changed now

    • Yes, the DS918+ has USB ports at the front too.

  • One plus for qnap is (I heard, I only own Synology) that you can plug in monitor keyboard and mouse to the unit and access it (with Synology you need a laptop or PC to remote access).

    • yeah if you want to use it as a media centre or VM box

  • I don't have synology, so cannot comment.

What I have is qnap ts435be (bump up the memory to 16gb) and I have been using it for:
    - plex server for 3 people (I have a lifetime subscription thus using its hardware transcoding as required)
    - connect directly to the projector (using hdmi) and use kodi to watch plex library (using plexkodiconnect) in the big screen
    - cctv recording
    - offsite backup using syncovery app to backblaze
    - VPN server
    - win2012 vm (allocated 1gb memory only)
    - docker container for nginx, and occassional dev test

The CPU is not as good as Intel one, but at least it can transcode some of my plex collections

So far I'm happy with their support response too

    • thanks,

      what's your drive configuration?

and with the cameras, it's just any IP camera?

      • 4 x 8TB WD Red (2xRAID1 for important docs and qnap o/s, 1 for movies, and 1 for cctv recording)

Camera: Hikvision (forgot the model number), currently only have 1 camera, planning to have another one, this time eufyscam2, when they are available in aus

  • Synology for software, Qnap for hardware.

Checkout https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator to work out the raid type and free space. Also if you'll be adding in the future.

I have a Synology, crazy easy to setup and sync.

  • Never owned a Qnap, but I can talk from my own experience of now on my second Synology. I have a 918+ which I got for under $600.
Hands down the most reliable hardware I have ever bought. Even my first one from years ago is still working, and still receiving updates.

  • Has anyone seen the two Gamers Nexus videos of their Synology NAS's dying?

The power issue seemed to be a common fault on the 1815+.

the second one was the 918+ power brick though

  • new TS-431X3 & TS-431KX models announced at CES2020

meant to be affordable 10Gbe units
