Energy Australia Solar Feed-in Tariff Decrease for NSW, ACT, SA and QLD

Hi All,

Received communication that Energy Australia will be lowering their feed-in tariff rates from 27 January 2020.
https://www.energyaustralia.com.au/home/help-and-support/faq…

State / Feed-in tariff rate before 27 January 2020 / Feed-in tariff rate from 27 January 2020
NSW 12.5c/kWh 10.5c/kWh
ACT 12.5c/kWh 10.5c/kWh
SA 15.0c/kWh 11.5c/kWh
QLD 16.1c/kWh 11.5c/kWh

Last bill we feed in 1686kwh which means a difference of $77 credit on the new rates. (QLD rates)

What are the best energy offers available at the moment for solar feed-in tariff rates?

  • I'm in the same boat in Qld. 5.5kw system with this change meaning I'll pay $72/qtr more. Energy Australia was quick to try to suggest they could charge the exit fee on my contract should I leave - notwithstanding this plain detrimental change. Only after I said I would take it to the Ombudsman did they say they would leave a note to confirm it would be waived. Still researching my options.

Energy Locals has a deal for 15c FIT but capped at 10kw/day feed in before it drops.
Origin's Solar Optimiser has 15c FIT.
Best seems to be AGL Solar Savers at 17c FIT - but that'll still be an increase of about $40/qtr for me. Can anyone find any better?

    • factor in the $75 credit AGL gives you as well, will help a little ($150 if you have both fuels)

Same here. Put the power prices up but pay you less for what they are pillaging.

On the flip side off grid is getting more affordable.

    • Would love to go off grid but with electric HWS, oven and aircons, our biggest day of consumption has hit about 57kw. Peak production maxes out at about 33kw/day, and that's with the most panels I could fit on the roof. Obviously it would come down a lot if we ditched the HWS and electric oven back to gas - but by how much?

That’s a lot of power. Time to cut back.

        • That’s the biggest day ever, as I said, and isn’t representative of usual usage. It is however indicative of the problem with going 100% off grid.

      • Gas Ovens are relatively rare items. Most are Gas stoves with Electric Oven

In NSW AGL and Origin are 21c

That's what I was going to say.

AGL has a good sign on bonus too.

Also got this for Qld and was very disappointed. Will have to get the old spreadsheet out once again.

In the news yesterday I heard that EA were also increasing their supply charges as well.
It's a Hong Kong company masquerading as Australian, better to go elsewhere.

  • I'm also on the same boat. Was perfectly happy not paying anything each quarter…

Mine is 20c with AGL on contract price until May.

So I am in Qld and was getting 16.1 feed-in tariff with energy Australia.

Contacted Energy Australia and tried to lock-in feed in tariff for another 12 months at least but was told that regardless of when contract term finishes, EA will decrease all feed-ins to 11.5c on 27Jan. They say that feed-in tariff does not form part of fixed pricing in contract and they can change at any time.

Contacted AGL and they confirmed that their feed-in currently 17c will be fixed for the term of the contract - interesting.

They gave me some new supply and usage rates which basically match my existing 28% off deal but the feed-in rate is the clincher. So far I have not found anything to match the old 16.1c feed-in deal. I figure I will be about $150 worse off per quarter but still looking.

    • I did the maths on the AGL deal and with my stats (average 1300 usage / 1400 feed in per quarter), I’m only about $40/qtr worse off if I move to AGL after 27 Jan 2020. Your usage must be quite high or your feed in quite low if you are still going to be $150/qtr worse off on the AGL deal?

Again check with AGL and Origin. In NSW I got a 2 year contract which locks in the Feedin tariff (Basic was 21c - but gave me extra 2c) . I can cancel at anytime, and rates can change BUT feedin tariff is fixed for the 2 years

      • Which one gave you the extra 2c feed-in after the haggle - AGL or Origin?

Put all of the new info into my spreadsheet, and if I can get an extra 2c from AGL (Qld currently 17c) then it will be slightly better than current EA deal.

        • It was origin, after leaving and going to AGL, they then offered me this to come back. No Haggling. I tried Haggling before I left and no deal. Ironic isnt it.

I updated the OZBargain Community - Australian Electricity Prices for Queensland (I won't be doing NSW as I don't have the time/energy) with all current provider plans.

A couple of points of note:
    * Energy Australia still seem to be pretty good even with the FIT reduction
    * The EnergyLocals Local Saver plan seems to be pretty decent if you are a high user (to overcome their fixed monthly charge / contrasted with low daily usage charge) and currently has 16c FIT (for first 10Kwh/day)
    * Diamond Energy seem to have very competitive rates and a 12c FIT.

    • I've also left the grandfathered SecureSaver plan on from Energy Australia. Many people were on this as it offered great rates with a 28% discount. It was on a 2 year benefit period, so you'll able to stick with it until 2 years after you signed up to it… probably a better option than any current plans anywhere else.

AGL Solar Savers also very good due to high 17c FIT (already mentioned above).

  • My retailer is giving me $0.74 per kWh (for the 1st 10 per day) then $0.72 for the rest. This is on the PFIT but I believe they have similar rates above the base level for nonPFiT consumers.
If you want to switch to GloBird, I can refer you and I’ll share my referral bonus with you.

    • Are you sure? They are buying for more than they are selling to anyone else? Peak power rates are 0.59per kWh.

    • GloBird standard FIT is 12c in Vic and 8c in other states. The PFIT is high as you say, but this isn't available to new people joining them now.

  • Like most here I'll go back to the drawing board and find the best rates in QLD for me. I have a 15kw system so a lot of other companies that offer good FIT rates won't be eligible for me unfortunately.

EA are going to lose a lot of customers over this. Only way it'll change is by people power! Go elsewhere! They are so incompetent!

  • Got the dreaded letter today as well. ;-(

Did a quick google and found this:

    https://www.afr.com/companies/energy/solar-households-to-fac…

    • Paywalled

      • You can try google the link and then tap on the link. It works for me. ^_^ I don't think I am allowed to repost the article. It's very long as well.

  • Very nice, been useful to me already.

  • anyone on a monthly billing with energy australia? i plan to switch to agl but the next read despite being on smart meter is March. i want to exit on or before 27th Jan :(

    • They will have final metre read if you request to switch

    • You sign a contract with them now, they honour the contract and it starts from when meter is read, so no need to delay locking down the contract

  • AGL offering $75 credit per fuel you sign up (so up to $150) and a FiT of 21c in NSW and 17c in QLD. If you have gas & elec, worth it even for a few months (you can leave anytime no fee).

They own 3 solar farms so at least you know they are serious about solar

    • How do you get 21c FIT in NSW?
It is more like 10cents and has daily cap?

  • I missed the original email, but noticed the 16.1c drop to 11.5c (I'm in Qld) in the paper bill.

Ran a quick comparison and AGL Solar Saver came out on top - so have just now signed up online for the extra discount.

And yes - according to my reading - AGL fix the FiT rate for 12 months!
