Facebook matching donations made to GlobalGiving for Australian Wildfire Relief Fund

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Hey OzBargainers,

Sheryl Sandberg (COO of Facebook) announced today they will match donations (1:1) to Global Giving for the Australian Wildfire Relief Fund (up to $1,000,000) + they have already donated $250,000 to Red Cross.

If you have not donated already, this is a great time to as your money is worth twice as much!

Be aware this appears not to be tax deductible (unlike many other forms of giving. And if you know you can get a tax refund you might be able to give more).

I'd also be wary of whether FB can claim the tax deduction for the portion that YOU spend. Same reason I don't donate to these "would you like to give $2 to xyz" at the checkout deals. But then, I'm cynical :)

    • The question is, is Globalgiving an Australian DGR?
Their website doesn't seem to claim it is. ACNC doesn't seem to list it.
So my guess is that it is not going to be deductible - which is stupid frankly.
I don't think Facebook can claim any part of your donation - as the gift is not made to them to pass on. But I've not looked into exactly how this is set up.

Thanks for your posting. I have donated to Global Giving after seeing this post. But I reckon donating an organisation in overseas might not be a good idea. First of all, it transfers money to overseas account which does money exchanges and can have hidden transaction fees. Plus as DCVR mentioned it is not a tax deductible.

  • Cheers for the heads-up champ. Was trying to find out which one to make a donation to and came across this. Absolutely heartbreaking what's going on still in shock I think hard to believe :(

  • $173,039* raised of $4,397,504* goal
