Has the Samsung Malware Issue been Blown out of Portion?

Basically in most Samsung Devices there is a "Device Care" software installed and the underlying source code for that is produced by Qihoo 360 which has gained infamy in Mainland China.

Do you guys think it is a big issue or not?

Samsung will probably claim it sends routine diagnostic data for service improvement;) but we will never know.

Maybe if a high level net sec person has tools to scan what outgoing packets are being sent we will find out, but then again you'd probably get called out for being anti China if there is anything sus.

Kinda weird that this info is spread before s11 launch. funny world we live in.

    • I just realised the predecessor was the Clean Master software which uploads your directory details to their servers…

I guess maybe the change was supposed to be one step in the right direction? But we still don't know what exactly the Qihoo thing is doing.

Service improvement of Chinese surveillance technology????

  • Worried about your “dick pics”?

No. Too small to photograph anyway.

      • Pepper and tweezers job, mate.

On a semi-serious note, is there one guy, in the history of mankind, that thinks a woman wants to receive one of these?

        • Just following the Golden Rule probably…

    • Not exactly a rare internet phenomena

  • I think it's an issue because they send this data unencrypted over HTTP (if I am to trust Reddit comments). I use my phone regularly on unsecure connections (eg. maccas wifi or w/e) so this is a risk someone may get this info - not sure what they can do with it though I'm not technically versed in this area.

The fact that the Chinese government can potentially snoop on my IMEI etc is also bad but not something as bad as sniffing my Whatsapp messages.

However since I do somewhat value my privacy and dislike the Chinese government, I've taken the advice on that thread and started using NextDNS (I'd do Pihole but no time to set it up for a while) and I haven't seen anything to 360 or 360 related CN domains on my Samsung Note 10+. I do see it blocking a bunch of facebook crap and random ad/tracker websites even though I don't see any ads or use facebook.

I think it's better to be aware (or slightly paranoid) of these things and be wrong than to be complacent and then get screwed later on. That reddit thread might be blown out of proportion a little bit but I wouldn't have bothered to do any of this had I not seen it on r/all despite 360 being around for years.
